Trouble shout the problem.
1) Spark are you getting spark at all? did you hit anything and possible you bent the blade. ( It is directly connected and the timing could be off. ) means new camshaft if handy kinda bad if not = bad replace the motor.
NO Spark at and all is good check the wiring to the auto shut off if shorted you won't get a spark.

2) If you then check fuel?
a) correct type and freshness (not last seasons fuel) look for a cloudiness in the tank (water). remove on both cases and remember to clean and drain float, the Same thing when you remove Float Bowl look for (snotty) looking stuff. (water) clean with carb cleaner anyway.
All this good...

3) If you have spark and Fuel but not starting check for dirty (fuel line/filter) and replace filter/clean carb with Carb Cleaner.

All good should work first pull.
Hope I helped troubleshoot.

SOURCE: Poulan Pro 42 chainsaw will not start

I had the same problem on a P3416 saw. I had a new Champion plug and coil installed. I tested the plug by removing it and plugging it in the coil wire and ground the end of the plug on the engine block. It did not spark so I bought another plug. This one fired but it was real weak so I loosen the coil and slipped a piece of light folder paper between the coil and magnets and tighten the bolts. Got a better spark and got it to run.

Most starting problems with chainsaws are caused by flooding. Read and follow the start up procedure in your manual. Probably similar to this:
Start Procedure
Cold:

  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls)
  4. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  5. Push (open) choke pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull)
Warm:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) - Don’t pull with choke closed.
  4. Push (open) choke, pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull)
All new saws regardless of maker are set to run extremely lean to meet EPA mandated air quality standards. They are also fitted with a device to restrict richening the carburetor beyond initial factory settings this too required by the EPA. Most big box stores put them on the shelf and sell them to the consumer with no thought of how elevation may impact saw performance or longevity. Homeowners usually aren't concerned about changes in the saws performance until it quits operating. This combination results in many destroyed saws and homeowner saws of most brands being called trash!
I don't know what the elevation where you are located is but I'll wager it is different than where the saw was set up. If my saw I'd visit a good (Stihl in my case) saw shop, and pay a couple of $ to have the carb adjusted (fresh fuel mix (1.5 months or less) 40:1 (3.2oz/1gal Husqvarna or Stihl 2 cycle oil) oil/fuel ratio, and the clean air filter). Any money spent is worth less than the aggravation when the saw won't start and you might spark a mutually beneficial relationship with a local merchant. HTH

Start at 1.5 CCW form lightly seated then tune for performance like this:
Carburetor Adjustment by Madsens.com
http://www.madsens1.com/saw%20carb%20tune.htm
CW is leaner; to lean will destroy the saw. If over tightened closed (CW) the adjustment screw faces are easily marred; marred adjustments are difficult to impossible to set properly.
Clean the air filter; adjusting with a dirty filter can cause a run lean condition once cleaned and the saw run.

There are 2 wav (sound - idle & full – may not be highlighted) files that I find most helpful, I think you will too.

I think your starting procedure may be the cause of flooding. Flooded is the #1 cause of hard starts in 2-cycle engines. Read carefully the recommended start in your manual. most miss the second note. It should be similar to this (read 3, read it again):
Warm start in the manual says 1/2 choke BS. Close choke, (sets fast idle) open choke, pull rope.
Start Procedure
Cold:

  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls; no more than 4).
  4. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  5. Push (open) choke pull starter until it starts (usually first pull).
Warm:
  1. Ignition on/off to on
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) – Do not pull with choke closed.
  4. Push (open) choke, pull starter until it starts (usually first pull).
If you still have trouble reply as you did before. I will get back to you. HTH

Need to check if you have fire at the plug immediately when it stops. If you don't it's probably the coil. It could be that or it could be fuel related.

The manual calls for 40:1 but with the new "FD" rated oils it can operate on 50:1 ratio. I recommend using the pre-packed fuels. They have the "FD" rated oil and 93 -95 octane non-ethanol fuel.

The lawnmower has not been used in over a year but has only been used a few times. I filled the gas tank up and tried starting it, it started for a short time then stalled. Primed it again then it would...

The needle valve in the carb is probably stuck. you have to take the Bowl off the bottom of the carburetor, drop the Float down and get the needle valve down from the Seat area. .Clean the one Jet while it's out. This 10% ethanol gas is horrible on carburetors. Now our idiot politicians are talking about going to 15% that will destroy all carburetors. I guess they use illegal aliens to work on their property so they have no idea what's happenng

My pro user g5000 generator wonts start after being stood for 6 months any ideas

Hello John, Your gas more than likely has gone bad. If you have spark and good compression and it won't start then chances are the gas has gone bad. Today's gas contains about 10% ethanol, which is absolutely terrible for small engines. Gas with ethanol has a max shelf life of about 90 days under perfect conditions. A month or less is more realistic. Here is the problem, ethanol absorbs water and sits at the bottom of the tank in the generator. If You have a 5 gallon tank With 10% ethanol then 10% times 5 gallons equals half a gallon of water saturated ethanol sitting at the bottom of the tank, I don't care what kind or how good an engine it is, it won't run on water saturated alcohol. Here is a great video explaining it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeCyFxoWPpo So what I would suggest is to drain the tank and the carburetor bowl of all the old gas. Replace the bowl and check for leaks. While everything is empty I would suggest that you replace the fuel line with a Tygon line. Tygon is resistant to ethanol. I would also ad a see through inline fuel filter and a new spark plug. After this is all done, put in a small amount of gas, less then a half gallon and see if she fires up. If it fires up right away you should be all good to go. Let the generator run until it's completely empty. And store it empty. Here are some problems and solutions that I have for gas with ethanol. I live in Savannah Georgia and the high humidity during the summer can ruin the gas in my lawn tractor in less than 2 weeks due to water saturation. The tractor is almost impossible to start and runs terribly until the remaining gas is used up. I have stopped filling the tank completely and I use just enough gas to cut the lawn then I store the tractor almost empty. I also use gas cans made by a company called Blitz. These containers are pretty much airtight and do not allow the ethanol to absorb water. This has made a tremendous difference in engine performance. Another thing that you can do is to check out this website http://pure-gas.org/ If you are lucky , you might have a gas station that sells gasoline without any ethanol added. This type of gas has a much longer shelf life and if a product like Stabil is added, you might get over a year of safe storage of gas for your generator. Municipal airports have banned ethanol in aviation gas and so have most marina's. It might cost a little more but it sure is worth it when the lights go out. If you can't find pure gas then I suggest you store gas in the Blitz containers for about 3 to 4 months. If you don't need to use the generator then use the gas in your car and refill the Blitz tanks again. Better safe than sorry. I hope this helps and if it does would you please be so kind and give me a positive rating for my solution. Good luck and thank you, Michael Burke.

I just purchased a poulan lawn mower at Kents. Have not used yet. Can you add unleaded gas to the poulan lawn mower/do you have to mix the gas?

You do not mix gas in a 4 cycle engine. You have to mix gas and oil for a 2 cycle engine, such as in a weed whacker, chainsaw, or leaf blower. I do not know of any 2 cycle Poulan mowers (or any other brands for that matter). Unleaded gas is all you can buy in the United States and all current mowers will run on it, although they really don't like that new ethanol additive. If your mower is new then it should have come with an owner's manual which will explain what to do, as well. Hope this answers your question.

DONT HAVE PROBLEM JUST NEED TO KNOW MIXTURE OF GAS/OIL FOR POULIN PRO 20 INCH

The correct mix is 40:1. That is 3.2 oz 2 cycle engine oil to 1 gallon regular unleaded gas 87 octane. Use ethanol free gas if you can. Ethanol will damage your fuel lines in time.

What is the oil to gas mix? Paulan xt-200

Poulan motors usually use a 40:1 mix ratio.

That is 3.2 oz of 2-cycle oil to 1 Gallon (128 oz) of gas.

Be sure to not use gas with more than 10% Ethanol.

2375 ''wild thing'' poulan saw hard starting after carb rebuild

Through trial and error on fairly new Poulin Pro, found that the usual 3-half turns for both high and low was too much (flooded) (Used to be good starting point on weed eaters years ago. So, turned both all the way in, and only backed out 1-full turn. (2-halves) Saw fired up perfectly, and ran wide open just fine. Try that.
