Yes. sound like you have a bad battery. try replacing the batter and see what happens. if the starter relay clicks, then it is working, but since it wont start, it has to be the battery.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Starter relay problem is common to most bikes, not only to Harley Davidsons.  More particularly, the fault would be on the contacts that do the actual switching of the high current supply to the starter motor.  The clicking sound is significant as it indicates that the starter relay is working or at least trying to. The click is a result of the coil magnetizing the plunger that pulls one of the internal disks to contact the stationary disk.  Each disk is connected to a big terminal; 1 for the battery +, the other to the starter motor.  Common faults are melted insulators, corrosion, pitting or burning.  While some starter relays could be disassembled and cleaned, they often fail again eventually. The best approach would be to replace the starter relay.

To confirm a faulty starter relay, short the 2 big terminals (on the nuts, not on the threaded stud) when the click is heard.  Expect a big spark.  If the starter motor spins, then the starter relay's contacts are faulty; if not, then it would be the starter motor or more particularly the carbon brushes and/or the communtator segments.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

My starter won't work just one click noise when I try start my harley

A LOUD single click, sounding the the started is initally engaging and then does nothing?....that would be a bad starter clutch.
Is it a fairly loud rapid clicking noise like a machine gun?....that would be low battery CURRENT to starter, faulty battery.
Is it a quiet single click?....that would be a bad starter relay

Can't ride at night as tail light not working, brake light OK. Is there a switch I'm not seeing or is it supposed to come on and stay on when engine running? Nothing found in owners manual. Simple...

The only switch on your tail light is the ignition switch. Any time your headlight is on, you tail light should be on. Check the bulb first as this is the most common problem. If it still doesn't work, check the contacts in the socket. Next check the wiring.

good luck

you may have a bad starter relay, or bad starter colenoid, best solution, have starter relay checked, if good, replace starter, does it click when you try to start?but won't? clicking indicates bad battery connections, bad starter colenoid, or simply bad starter. sometimes it's better to replace the whole starter, considering how much it costs to check all the above. suggest that you have battery checked for free at autozone or advance automotive for free. if battery checks good, replace starter. if you accept my solution and it works, let me know via and thank you for choosing

Sounds like a bad battery or a bad starter relay. Take the battery out and take it to an automotive parts house. Ask them to load test the battery for you.

If the battery test good, reinstall it in the bike making sure your connections are good. Press the start switch and listen for the buzz. Look for the starter relay. It's a one inch plastic cube. When you find it, press the start button while holding the relay. Is this what is making the noise?

If all you feel out of the starter relay is a simply click, and the buzzing is coming from the starter, you're solenoid may need new contacts installed in it or your solenoid might be bad.

Good Luck

Sounds like a bad starter relay. When you turn your key to start, current flows through a relay which in turns supplies 12 volts to the solenoid on your starter motor. As you alluded to , typically the common clicking sound that we all hear occasionally, is usually related to a flat battery or bad starter motor, but as you have had these checked (by a professional?) the only possibility is the relay that supplies 12 volts DC to your starter motor solenoid.
