Question about 2001 Honda VT 600 C Shadow

2 Answers

2001 Honda Shadow 600 has 475 miles and has been stored for a while. Hard to start hot or cold. Choke must be on while riding and will get up to 60 or 65mph and will start hesitating. If you try to ride with the choke off it will die. I'm thinking it is in the fuel line, fuel filter and carb. Please help me, TYBO

Yup, Motorcycles don't like to sit with fuel in carb. It is likely you carbs have crud in the fuel passages. You will need to have them cleaned out or do it yourself. It's that white stuff called corrosion thats plugging everything. Some fuel system cleaning additives will soften any restrictions but it's a hit or miss time and patience consuming process. Best to rebuild. Good Luck. I had one of those bikes and I loved riding it everyy chance I had.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always on bikes with carbs with no prep on storage, a carb pulldown is required. This is to enable the cleaning off the varnish like film coating on the inside of the carbs, the jets, holes and most surfaces. This is a result of the fuel turning to varnish like after sometime. While the actual cleaning is straightforward, it is the carb removal and re-installation that maybe more of a challenge. A few notes to consider:

  • count the number of turns on the air screw;
  • take notes of what hose goes to where;
  • soak the dis-assembled internal components in carb cleaner;
  • might as well drain and clean the tanks;
  • a can of compressed air maybe used to blow through the vents, pinholes and jets. Be careful as some have thin / small washers, rubber o-rings and springs;
  • a service manual may come in handy.
Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

2001 Honda shadow 600 When I turn it on with the choke out its fine but as soon I push the choke in it dies

is it warmed up enough, Hondas are cold blooded. is the idle circuit clean and allowing the proper amount of fuel to flow as this sounds like the problem with it dying when the choke is pushed off.

2005 Honda Shadow Spirit (750) hesitant and sputtering upon first spring ride. Thoughts?

Just sounds like either a jet is blocked in one of the carbs or maybe a spark plug is fouled up.tap the exhaust down pipes with your hand quickly to see which one isn't getting hot to see which ones not running.

It star with hoke on the maximum position only, is i throttle it dies imediatly. WHy ?

The choke setting required for starting is related to the temperature. In cold weather, a full choke is normally needed ; in normal temp (70 degrees F) a moderate choke may be all that is needed. Of course, once the engine starts, you may need to adjust the choke as the engine warms up - when ready to ride, you will want to have zero choke set. Hope this helps !

VT1100C2 Shadow Sabre does not readily start when cold, 30-40 degrees, Help. Thanks

You do not state how many miles you have on your bike. Plugs are probly foul by now. Also you don't say if you choke the engine when you start it. Leave the choke pulled until warmed up. Thin push the choke off.

Not to sure about this one, ok, if the choke wont stay out, then try to trace the choke cable to the carby, have a close look and see which parts move on the carby when you activate the choke, some thing just needs to be tightened up, so that the choke stays on. Also, you say the bike stalls and runs rough, is this with the choke on? If yes, then that is just a sign that you dont need so much choke on. Just try half choke. Do you live in a warm climate? if so, then you dont need much choke . So there is no adjustment really, only by the amount of choke you apply. Also remember, never use the choke if the engine is already warm. And, only use the choke for the first start of the day, when the engine is stone cold. The correct way to to start a cold bike engine is, pull the choke on fully, crank over engine, but DO NOT give it throttle, (this defeats the purpose of using the choke), when engine fires up and starts, slowly push the choke in till a smooth, high idle is acheived. You should be able to ride off slowly, and push the choke off after about a mile.

Sounds like the battery may be weak, recharge and test, maybe replace. As far as starting, most Hondas will not start if you open the throttle any at all. Shadows being liquid cooled are generally cold natured, but you should be able to ride away with the choke on in 1 or 2 minutes, you might have to ride as far as 4 or 5 miles at highway speed before you can take the choke fully off. If it is taking longer than these times, you will need to remove and clean the carbs. the low speed jets may be partially blocked up.

Try cleaning the carbs ,could be bad air supply or blocked idle jets .These jets have very small holes and you will need very fine cleaning wires .Nozzel cleaners the type used to clean out oxy / acetylene nozzels are great for this job.
