This is an indication thatthe valve seals are starting to go bad. The fix is to pull the head and swap old seals for new ones. While the head is off, now would be a good time to re-seat the valves and de-carbon the head and pistons. How far do you want to go? New piston rings and a fresh honing of the cylinders would be nice.

2010 Chevy silverado starts hard and puffs smoke when cold

Black smoke is too much fuel. My guess would be that there is an injector that is stuck open draining the pressurized fuel into a cylinder or several cylinders. And that is a considerable amount of fuel. And it would account for the hard start because there isn't any fuel being pumped into the other injectors until the pump builds the pressure back up.

High oil consumption, but no visibleleaks: on a 2002 Toyota Hilander V-6. I suspect valve seals (vehicle was sitting for several months), but wondered if there was some other possible source. Only one time...

Hi,normaly if the stem cills are worn it would smoke on start up,as when the engine is switched off oil will pass the cill and couse a puff of smoke untill the oil burns off,it could be that the head gasket has a falt where oil leaks strate into one of the cylinders,or maybe the where the car had not been started for awhile the piston rings might have frosen a bit,you could try a engine flush and see if that helps,in the past I have used a aditive called slick-50 which gave good resalts, remeber as I have not seen the car this is all food for thought, hope this was some help, hope you sort it.

How to replace valve seals. when cycle is on side stand for a day or two and you start engine it smokes for a few seconds

This has been an issue for ALL Goldwing's (1000, 1100, 1200, 1500, and probably 1800's). It does not hurt anything. If you center stand you cycle it will never happen. but all Goldwing's are known to let out a puff of smoke if left on the side stand. The oil may be leaking past your piston rings and not your stem seals. If you want to change your stem seals you need to put the cylinder on top dead center compression stroke, remove the spark plug, screw in an air hose from your air compressor to pressurize your cylinder, with air pressure hold the valves in place compress the valve springs with a valve spring compressor, remove the parts (washer, cotter keys, and springs), pry off the seal, pop on the new one and reassemble. It is a lot easier living with the puff of smoke, Happy Trails.

THe bike starts and runs well. AFter it warms up I get white smoke occasionally from the tailpipes. AFter cooling down, I can start it again and its clean. No other known problems yet

You are dealing with a rich condition when you get the white smoke. If you park the cycle on the side stand , then start it you will get the traditional puff of smoke which goes away after a minute. In your case you have either a sunk float or stuck/dirty/worn float needles. Ethanol fuel is very hard on black plastic floats and has been known to ruin them on a regular basis. The floats and needles have been replaced on all three of my GL1000's. The only proper fix for the condition you describe would be to pull the carburetor rack out the motorcycle, disassemble, clean the carburetors, and replace the both the floats and the float needles. This should restore the GL back to smoke free, except of course when you park it on the side stand.

Exhaust pipe comes out white smoke when start bike on side stand

Continuous or just for the 5-10 seconds.
If continuous you may have oil seeping past your pistons oil rings or valve guides oil seals.
Check your spark plug see if they are fouled badly (covered heavily and oily) or just covered by oil and sooth lightly.
If 5-10 sec it is normal as the engine is heating up there are normally a little oil seeping past the seals.

I have an 84 honda goldwing aspencade and when it sits for a day or two it smokes when i start it but quits smoking after it warms up. ANY IDEAS ?

Yes, the piston rings are starting to wear allowing some oil into the cylinder when it sits idle .There are some things you could do such as switching to a high mileage oil that is specially formulated to help or maybe an oil additive. The bike still runs great i'm sure and will probably run for years before any major work needs done. hope this helps

1997 jeep grand cherokee cranks long time before starting

generally your problem can be traced to a faulty anti-drainback valve in the fuel pump. After sitting for an extended time fuel must be re-filled and pressurized before engine will start. Second primary cause is a leaking fuel injector which does the exact same thing from the other end of the system but, this is also accompanied by a puff of smoke after starting.
Other causes can be low comrression from engine wear, or, a weak ignition coil but these are far less common.

Rebuilt puffs blue smoke off idle

If it only has 500 miles on it I would drive it awhile before doing anything. It could be the rings just haven't seated in yet.

Big puff of white smoke at start up after sitting for several hours.

white smoke is water
blue smoke is oil.
nest time try and smell the white smoke see if it smells sweet?
if it does its antifreeze.
and also black smoke is fuel (like a leaky injector )
hope this helps
