Do you have any warning lights on the dashboard? Exhaust pipes do heat up to a high temperature. The harder you drive the car the hotter the exhaust gets. If there are problems causing it, you will notice a drop in power and worse fuel consumption.

Your escape is a 3.0L duratec motor. Is the motor itself overheating or just the pipes? The high idle is often related to a dirty Idle Air Control module or IAC, which is located on the top of the motor near the throttle body. If you clean this, or replace it, after a few days the high idle is often times solved.

They will all glow red when you let them idle for a couple minutes. The timing is retarded at idle I believe. Once reved up they will cool off. I figure best to give them a little rev once and a while to help prevent this.

Because the timing is off. If the timing is too advanced, or too retarded, it will make your exhaust pipe cherry red.
