Head gasket almost never gives trouble and if it does the sound of escaping compression is unmistakable.
The valves might be at fault or it might be the cylinder bore or piston rings.
A wet compression test could prove informative. It doesn't take long to remove the head for a bore check and if no scores are found and there seems nothing obviously wrong with the valves, wipe plenty of oil around the bore, fit the cylinder head and recheck compression.
If there is a significant increase it indicates worn or broken piston rings and if there isn't a significant increase it is likely the valves are the major culprit.
I am not sure what the compression pressure should be but don't expect the high readings of a car engine. 60 - 80 psi maybe...
SOURCE: I need a manual for my MTD Huskee 5hp rear tine tiller
I went to MTD web site and they had all the manuals for all there products. You will need a model and serial number to get them. Thank you for responding back to me.
I got the manual for the tiller and the engine.
SOURCE: tilller will not run
Get the model # and serial # off of the sticker. Got to the Troy Bilt site and use the owners manual link. Need to leave off the last 3 numbers of the model #.
If that site does not have the manual, I've found them on the MTD site. I enter only the first 2 numbers of the model # and then hunt for my manual from the list.
If all else fails, you can call Troy Bilt at their # provided on the site.
Hope this helps.

if your oil level is to high it will do this. i would drain and refill the oil to oem specs slowly as not to overfill so it doesn't blow over the top of the piston.hope this helps

From what I read you need a new rewind clutch and the spring and cord go into the housing. Briggs is easy to fix. contact me at [email protected] and I can send you what you need or you can send it to me and I will repair it very cheap!! Parts are available at almost any small engine parts place.
