Question about kawasaki VN 800 Vulcan Classic Motorcycles

2 Answers

Very slight backfire with throttle decrease. Lack of power when throttling up while cruiseing. Can you assist with some basic pot settings? Thanks, Jim Grider (317) 319-8131 P.S. I own a 2007 Vulcan VN900 Classic LT.

My Vulcan 900 is fuel injected and the gas is not an issue. The problem IS with the fi2000 pot settings. Thanks, Jim.

The solution was right on the money! It turned out there was a leak at the intake. Thanks, Jim.

There are few things which you should check that cause backfire and power loss.
Use a higher-grade fuel for a while to help clean your fuel tank. You may have ended up with a tank of dirty gas that's causing some problems with your fuel injection.
Buy a can of fuel-injection cleaner that goes into your gas tank. This will clean out debris and dirt from the tank that's getting into your fuel line. Check with your motorcycle owner's manual or the manufacturer's recommendations to make sure this is safe for your particular motorcycle.
Check to see if the jets are clogged with debris or thick "gunk" that's causing your motorcycle to backfire. This will also cause problems with the fuel efficiently getting through the engine.
Take a close look to see if you have a dirty carburetor. The fuel will not be able to run efficiently through the engine with a dirty carburetor.
Visit your favorite motorcycle mechanic for an evaluation of the backfiring situation. Your motorcycle may need a complete engine cleaning to solve the backfiring problem.

Scooter, when key is turned on the scotter jumps forward, the thottle is not in use, and the scooter is NOT IN GEAR, scarry

Your scooter may have lost its inhibit resistor 10k resistor that some scooters had on the center post of the throttle pot to stop this from happening. but the throttle has to be out of neutral position in order for it to move on startup. The throttle pots are normally 5k ohm pot, about 2.5k from the center to either outside posts. It would be wise to replace the speed control and the throttle together. Basically the controller thinks it is being told to go right at start up, that comes from the throttle.

Why engine pulses at cruise speed?

old car. If you want simple guessing , just wait it will com.e...
on new cars, it be lack of engine power (or DTCs stored showing bad problems, with LEAN fuel, or EGR stuck open or throttle motor sticking) but back WHEN its vastly more crude and simple and problematic.
I'll answer for USA cars. and stock systems,
all the above same but not throttle elect. motor. no throttle by wire then/.
there are 2 systems, vacuum mech. or electro mech.
one yanks the throttle , the other adds metered air to control speed.
just one glance at it and bingo , post a photo.?

caravan ,not grand caravan
which enigne, of the many, cruise parts can vary by engine type.
my online shows 5 engines and not one PCM has cruise pin(s)
its a separate system then, found in the last chapters in the FSM.
2 possibles.
  • (engine running lean, at cruise, or misfiring) (tune up time>?)
  • or the cruise parts are bad.

id say the cruised servo motor is bad or its valve. sticks.
if parts are sticking clean it , lube it and it might correct.
I do not have access to the servo data. at all.
join a real dodge forum and get that.

The manual freewheel lever will not go into gear

hi, 7 flashes implies the throttle lever (speed pot etc) is not in the correct position, other words not dead center, (PGDrives S -Drive Controller)

Let me explain , the pot in question is a 5K value and the throttle lever rests in the center of that about 2.5k give and take

If you can see the bottom of the metal stem in with the throttle lever is mounted there should be a cross head slot now that should be dead center, the slot facing you as you sit on the scooter, slightly off center will cause the fault reported.

I have a gogo three wheeler and some times when i turn on the switch the scooter will not move, but when i turn the switch off and on two or three times it will work and some times the horn will start...

The go go controller has a controller which will give you a specific beep code to indicate the problem with your scooter. From what you are describing, it seems that the throttle potentiometer is out of neutral at start-up. The controller needs to electrically sense the throttle pot is in neutral (center of left and right) to start. By turning the scooter on and off you are jiggling the pot enough to get it to zero out(go to neutral).
Please get back to me with the exact model of the go go and with the exact number of beeps in the error code and I will be able to diagnose the problem in a more definitive way.
The most common error codes involve the throttle pot out of neutral at start-up and the brake freewheel lever is in freewheel.
You can see if the throttle pot is out of neutral by moving it slightly in either direction with one hand and turning the scooter off and on with the other hand. If the scooter works by this slight adjustment of the pot, then this part needs to be replaced. Hope this helps.

Fuel pressure low at pressure monitor

HI. There are some areas that will need to be checked for faults, in this case. Check the following:

1. Fuel filter- If this device is clogged, or faulty, it will decrease the flow of fuel to the injector assembly. If the filter hasn't been changed recently, this will be a good place to start.

2. Fuel pump- This device may be weak, or grounded poorly. check the ground, and all wires the link the pump to the power source. replace any corroded contacts and connectors. wires,as well, if needed.

3. Fuel pressure regulator- The fuel pressure regulator is used to keep the fuel pressure in the fuel rail consistent and change the fuel pressure depending on the throttle position. The fuel rail is in a fuel loop between the fuel pump feed and return lines. Because the fuel delivery requirements change depending on the engine's throttle position and engine loads, the fuel injection system must be able to adapt to meet the fuel requirements of the engine's operating conditions during idle, acceleration and steady cruising. The fuel pressure regulator has a small vacuum line attached to it that allows the pressure regulator to change the fuel pressure in the fuel loop depending upon the intake manifold pressure which changes as the throttle position changes. When the throttle is opened, the manifold vacuum pressure drops off, causing the pressure regulator to increase the fuel pressure in the fuel loop, which increases the amount of fuel delivery at the injectors to provide for the additional fuel needed for the engine to operate properly. At idle, the manifold vacuum increases and the demands for the rate of fuel delivery are decreased so the pressure regulator decreases the fuel pressure in the fuel loop.

1. Look for visible evidence of fuel leaks.
2. A pressure regulator can become defective due to foreign material or a ruined diaphragm.

The result will be hard starting, poor idle quality, and lack or power. Burned spark plugs can result from operating with a lean air/fuel mixture, as well. replace this device if faults exist.

Backfire out of carb!

Remove and clean the carbs. Clean the air filter and install new stock plugs. Re-mount the carbs and then balance and sync them. Now would also be a good time for a compression check. Valves and rings do give problems sometimes but these problems show up first as a lack of power. Since you didn't report a power problem I doubt if valves are the problem.
