Question about 2008 Harley Davidson FLHX Street Glide

07 street glide 15000 miles bad vibration at 1100 rpm and at speeds up to 80 and very harsh vibration on decel. have checked frame swingarm inner primary, and fairing, no luck, also pulled tranny cover off and all looks good. any suggestions

    oops , we jack it up and run it and it does it not moving, also changed the front motor mount and top is fine

Have a good look at all the engine mounts, top, bottom and to tranny.maybe a cracked mount.make sure all bolts are tight

Could be a front wheel out of balance. On deceleration, it puts more weight on the front wheel.

If you have over 15000 miles I would change the spark plugs and clean the air breather for starters to see if that will help.

Bad vibration when in gear but idle speed

I'm not sure exactly which vehicle you have so I'll try to be genera yet as specific as possible to help you determine the problem. I'm assuming here its a Gas Fuel engine.

1.) if its a carburetor type engine, You may need to adjust the RPM to increase or lower the Idle. Its commonly called the Ideal screw and adjust the air fuel ratio to stabilize the engine fuel mixture to increase the RPM.. its found on the Carburetor.

2.) ts fuel injected you will need to adjust the throttle body position to archive the same effect.

if it has a distributor , you can turn the distributor as well to adjust the RPM.

rough idling is usually caused by Mounts, since you changed yours the next most likely issue is the RPM itself or idling speed / rpm. If its to low you ill have that issue.

other possible cause is the distributor points (if any).. bad plugs, bad plug wires.. but those cause other issues while driving as well.

I just purchased a 2007 Street Glide (traded a Heritage Softail) and it seems to vibrate excessively at idle. Perhaps I'm just not accustomed to it yet. Your thoughts?

the touring models are going to vibrate or more so shake at and idle more than your softail.the one major difference in your twin cam "B" engine and twin cam 96" A engine is that the softail is counter balanced in the crank case and is also a solid mount engine. straight engine to frame.these two counter balancer's are chain driven off of the crank. the street glide has three rubber mounts on it, one being in the front where the wish bone or down tubes turn inder the bike and two in cleave blocks that are alighned by small pins to be located in the correct position the swing arm also uses these in mounting the swing arm. so you will notice at around 75 mph to 80 mph you may get a "rider known death wobble" (just slow down) there are after market braces in all ranges of price to solve that problem. the more expensive the better it will last and work.

Need to replace drive belt do you need to take primary off

Yes, the Outer and Inner primary has to come off as well as the swingarm. The belt will not go on without removing the swingarm because of the way the frame is made.

Uneven clearance top of swingarm to frame ,3 - 4mm r/h side 10 - 12mm l/h side 09 softail standard - been told by dealer is within specs but I am not convinced

I do know the Softail does have an offset but I don't know how much and to what direction. To find out for sure, you'll need a service manual for your bike with a frame drawing in it. It will tell you what the offset is as well as alignment points you can check. But, unless the bike has been badly wrecked, you're swingarm is probably correct. Do you have any reason to believe that it isn't other than just looking at it? If you look at an early FLH, you'll see that the rear wheel is not in the center of the fender but it is centered on the frame.

The way a Softail swing arm is connected to the frame, there is not much way for it to be out of alignment unless the bike has been subject to a very hard lick from the side. The swingarm of a Softail is mounted much strudier and is tougher than say a Wide Glide.

Your camchain maybe worn resulting in chain slap when engine loaded when still cold, or some valve lap delay resulting in pinging or blowback. (coughing). A top end inspection may be required

This may effect the vibrations but is likely to be loose engine to frame mounts or loose steering head.

Check play of rear shock mounts top and bottom for any play. This would impact through the frame and tank, bars etc., but is more to do with road surface and speed.

Are the wheels balanced?

Thoroughly inspect ALL bolts (engine mounts, engine head bolts, pegs, handlebars, triple clamps, swingarm, exhaust header and muffler mounts) for tightness as vibrations are one or two steps away from tumbling down the tarmac. Vibrations are the main cause of bolts loosening......

I get excessive vibration in my 06 Street Glide fairing at idle.

I have a 2007 street glid eand have been through 2 sets of fairing brackets. it started with around 500 miles on the bike. very bad design, I had the factory bracket reinforced and problem solved. My old mans bike, same problem. Check the fairing brackets,

At 1900 to 2100 RPM the engin shakes and rattles. It is in the engine and sounds like it is lifters. How can I check and fix?

How many miles on the engine? Are all the tappets rattling. If all the tappets are rattling, you don't have any oil pressure. If only one is making a loud noise, you've probably lost a roller on the end of one of the tappets. I think a '93 model was one of the engines that had the cheap INA inner cam bearing. Previous models had the Torrington bearing and after '94, they went back to that bearing. I could be anything.
But, it it sounds good below and above this RPM range, it's probably motor mounts. The FXR had the small rubber engine mounts. Check the front one first as it's fairly simple to check. The rear engine mounts are on the through bolt that holds the rear of the transmission and swingarm in. You have to pull the swingarm out to replace these.
Look for something loose first and then move to more complicated things.
