The bulb has two filaments then. one for running and one that increases the intensity of the light to show the brake.

when you depress the brake pedal, or squeeze the brake handle, you normally hear a click of the switch. if both switches are good, it's the wire.
the wire may have pinched enough that it was cut. check for a cut wire in areas of movement first.
around the triple tree, (steering area)...
near the shock (front and rear)
around the pedals
around the motor
and last but not least any wires under the frame subject to road abuse.

if you have the ability, test that the wire sends current from switch to bulb.

also, check the bulb fitting, make sure the plastic clip that holds the bulb is making contact to the bulb on all 3 contacts.

Since you have changed both bulbs and checked the fuses. you should follow the wires from the light as from riding you may have some how cut one of the wires to the light or from the brakes.

How do i fix the brake lights on my mercury sable. all the other lights work fine

Does your car have the `lamp out'indicator system? It's more complicated.
My manual shows fuse #28 , a 15 amp fuse powers the brake bulbs. Is this the one you changed?
A bulb can be out for a long time and you don't notice it,then the other burns out and you think they both went out at the same time, but they might not have, see?
So check the bulbs and make sure you got that brake switch installed correctly. don-ohio (:^)

Brake lights went out, changed bulbs, checked fuse, still wont work

You have to check the brake light switch which should be around the brake pedal on the upperside.
Ones located rremove the wires tht go to the switch and jump them by using a piece of wire, thn check if the brake lights come 'on'. If they do , thn its the switch tht may need replacing or even sometimes adjusting inorder to operate.
Hope this helps.

Rear Brake Lights not working, 3rd light is working

check the fuse for the stoplights. Even though the 3rd one is working it should be on a different fuse. With both of them not working even after you changed the bulb it would seem to lead to a fuse.
