Sounds like a couple of things. first because this is a free check. remove the plugs and do a pressure check on the pistons. you may have a valve problem. you will need to rebuild your carb and clean your jets as well.

4.5 cadillac engine sputters and back fire

  • Backfiring in internal combustion engines occur outside of the combustion chamber, and are typically the result of an improper air to fuel ratio. This can be caused by a vacuum leak, Idle air control valve, throttle position sensor, oxygen sensor, or just about any part of your emissions contorl system.

  • Backfires may also occur before the combustion chamber. One possible cause of this is igniton timing. If the timing is too advanced, the spark plug fires before the intake valves close, causing the combustion to propagate into the intake manifold, further igniting the air-fuel mixture there; the resulting explosion then travels out of the carburetor or intake and air filter. Alternatively, the engine timing may be retarded, in which case the combustion is not completed by the time the exhaust valves open, allowing the combustion to propagate into the exhaust system.

  • Improper wiring of the ignition can also lead to timing issues and backfires, or faulty coil or igniton modules.

  • Low fuel pressure, clogged fuel filters, and weak fuel pumps could cause a severe lean air-to-fuel ratio with fuel injection systems.

  • Missing or damaged catalytic converters can result in backfires out the tailpipe, but very uncommon, and usually only applies to engines set up for race applications.

Deceleration popping on a fuel injected bike

Hi Anonymous, popping, coughing, spitting, or backfiring through the carburator or induction module can be caused by air getting sucked in combustion chamber do bad intake seals leaking. Leaking exhaust gaskets can also be suspect. Remove air cleaner and backing plate, while engine is idling spray WD-40 or Brake Kleen around intake manifold to head area, if RPM's increase you have an intake leak and seals need to be replaced, also spark plugs will be burning whiter than normal. Good luck

When choke is off wont idle

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel cap or fuel tank is not venting properly.
2. Fuel filter clogged.
3. Fuel line pinched or kinked.
4. Float needle and seat sticking.
5. Float level too low.
6. Carburetor bowl vent line clogged/blocked/pinched.
7. Idle adjusting screw set too low.
8. Air/fuel mixture screw set too lean.
9. Idle port, transfer ports, slow air jet clogged.
10. Slow fuel jet clogged.
11. Faulty fuel pump.

4 wheeler backfire on start

incorrect air fuel mixture or a leak check for damage to the intake boot or airbox

i need to know more about how its running at low mid and high rpm to help you troubleshoot and you need to check for leaks especiely the intake boot if the intake boot is leaking that will need to be fixed before running the bike asumeing that is ok or fixed run the bike listen to it at idle standing is it surgeing with a good fast acceleration off the line with you siting on the quad ? or just realy rough ticking over with little guts off the line ?

midrange rideing how does it feel is there a bwarrr noise as u accelorate hard or does the engine roar up fast

is it reaching a good top end with good pulling power or poor pulling power

are the backfires constant or mainly whyle slowing down from high revs

if all are effected but there are no leaks then it may be float / fuel level that needs ajustment fuel level in ur float bowel effects all stages of rpm low mid and high

A rich problem gets worse as the engine heats up.

A lean problem gets better as the engine heats up.

hope this helps if u dont fix it your self first try and do them little rpm backfire tests for me itl tell me a lot

I have a 09 harley ultra 96 cubic it sputters when i`m rolling & give it gas it don`t miss while idling or when i`m crusing only when I give it gas...any suggestions?

fuel pressure leak possibly. grab some carb cleaner or wd40......with bike idling, spray around the intake gaskets. If the idle changes, you need to replace the intake gaskets. I wouldnt think it would happen to an '09 yet but do a pressure test on the fuel system. If not mistaken, it should be above 50psi. If low..........grab an owners manual........but first....

are you seeing any codes? engine light coming on? If you are seeing codes or an engine light, most likely sensors...i'll bet its a TPS sensor (36 bucks, do it yourself, its two screws), Do the wiggle test ( cracked wire under tank or just above fuel injectors). Are you backfiring out of the pipes or does it sound like your EFI is sucking air when you start sputtering? If it sounds like its gasping for breath.....get yer book out...........its really easy

check fuel lines externally
take off console from tank
open the fuel door on tank
check those fuel lines inside. Mine, just last week, out of the blue started sputtering.....3 pinholes in the fuel line from internal rubbing. made me start drinking to find it
FOLLOW THE BOOK. it can be intimidating at first, but if I can do it....anyone can

My bike will idel but won t rev. just cuts off

Starving for fuel.
Make sure carbs are getting fuel.
Make sure fuel filters are clean,
make sure fuel pump is working.

If carbs are getting fuel but wont rev, you need to clean your carbs because your jets are clogged

Idles high and misses when cold. after you run it for a while it runs normal

You didn't say whether your bike was fuel injected or carbureted. A fuel injected bike or a carbed bike with the enricher pulled out will idle high. It is supposed to. Now, it should not miss though. It might be time for a new set of spark plugs. The enricher runs a very rich mixture and will foul a plug if you run it too long. I always tell people to only run the enricher just long enough so you can keep the bike running with the hand throttle. Turn the enricher off as soon as possible to prevent fouling a plug. If the bike is fuel injected, you'll have to take it back to the dealer to have it adjusted.

Good Luck

1997 Chevy Cavalier is backfiring and sputtering sometimes on take off or acceleration. Any ideas what the problem is? New fuel regulator, all new injectors, done alot to this car.

Here is a list of some things that can cause it,
Emmissions system not functioning properly,
Faulty secondary ignition system
Fuel injection system in need of adjustment
Vaccum leak at fuel injectors, around intake manifold, or vaccum hoses
Clogged fuel filter
Weak fuel pump
To test for a vaccum leak, get a can of starting fluid, with the engine running, spray around the intake manifold, the vaccum hoses, connections and fittings, where ever you spray and the engine rev's up a little, you found a leak.

a common problem with these engines is a leaky intake gasket which sucks in outside air spray carb cleaner around intake base see if engine idle increases .most likely this is your problem
