Push in and turn. Turn all the way in, then after all the way in, turn 1 1/4 turn out and adjust as needed from there.

Most older cars had 2 adjustments , a air screw for enrichment and throttle screw for engine idle speed, later models did away with the enrichment screw, to adjust set idle screw to 600 rpm, adjust air mixture screw to fastest rpm , reset idle screw to preferred idle speed.

How do i stop the engine running at a fast idle


Assuming it is a completely mechanical system with no electrical or electronic control there is no actual fast idle facility unless it is provided by a Waxstat cable device fitted into the cooling system.

I think what you mean is the engine idle speed is too fast rather than it is running at "fast idle" which is a term used for a raised idle speed when an engine is cold and decreases as the engine warms until at normal operating temperature the idle speed should be normal. On an old diesel engine it is the Waxstat device if fitted that provides this facility or a hand operated throttle. Very old cars and trucks had hand throttles for fast idle but later this function was provided by the choke or strangler mechanism. Some luxury cars had an electrical device fitted but the fast idle of modern engines is invariably provided by electronics.

I expect you need to adjust the throttle stop screw of the injection pump. This is at the lever where the throttle linkage connects to the pump and there is generally two stop screws fitted that limit the travel of the lever. One screw limits the maximum travel of the lever and therefore the maximum engine speed and this is generally set during manufacture or remanufacture and sealed to prevent tampering.
The other screw is the idle screw which the lever is pulled against by a spring when at rest.
Before adjustment it is necessary to ensure the throttle linkage is not maladjusted and preventing the lever contacting the stop. Disconnecting the linkage until the idle speed has been adjusted will ensure this and then slacken the stop screw locknut, start the engine and turn the screw in or out as applicable until the desired idle speed is achieved, allow the engine to warm up and make further adjustment if necessary and tighten the locknut and reconnect the throttle linkage. Do not adjust any pump screw except the idle screw.

There is a special tool required to turn the jet screws pt no. 530035560 the screws are marked L and H you need to turn the L screw only this will adjust the mixture at idle, anto clockwise will increase the mixture, the third screw on the carb is to increase the idle speed once the mixture is correct, this can be adjusted with a cross cut screw driver.

Before you remove or try to adjust your low and high speed jets you should always count the number of turns it takes to lightly seat the idle mixture screw and high speed needle adjusting screws.
Be sure to write the number of turns down on a piece of paper so you will know how many turns from the seated position to open the jets when you go to reinstall them, or if you remove them for cleaning or replacement.
If you have aready tried to adjust them then the adjustments below should get it running for you for final adjustment when warm.
Normally you will adjust your idle jet to 1/2-3/4 turn open from the bottom seated position.
Then you will re-adjust the low speed of the engine when the engine is warm by turning the idle screw in or out till the engine runs smoothly at idle speed, around 1200 RPM.
The high speed jet is adjusted to 1 1/2- 1 3/4 open from the bottom seated position, after the engine is warm.
Then re-adjusted by turning the High Speed jet adjustment screw in or out till the motor runs smoothly at high speed.
Alway use the "lightly seated" method if you have not changed the screw settings.

How do you adjust the high speed mixture screw? I have a Ryobi RLH1100a MK III 31cc line trimmer, and after changing the fuel lines, it will start but not idle more than about 3 - 5 seconds before it...


Hi montex124, I will try to help. In the past few years carb makers have been making changes. Some carbs have no adjustment at all, the ports are all fixed inside the carb. Other carbs have only the idle speed mixture screw that can be adjusted, like yours seems to have. Is this screw you mention at the top and completely outside of the carb to adjust the throttle? If it is it's probably the idle speed screw which can be adjusted to any idle speed you want and has nothing to do with the air fuel mixture but If it is right next to the idle mixture screw, it might be the high speed mixture screw but is capped so it can't be adjusted. The low and high speed mixture screws should be marked next to each screw H and L.
The 1 1/2 turns suggested is sometimes just right but other times has to be adjusted, so you can try adjusting it to get your idle but maybe adjust the idle speed screw first to get a higher RPM so it doesn't stall on you. Like I said earlier it just adjusts the throttle, and is like when you are using it, and giving it gas as they say. I hope this helps just a bit. Regards and good luck. Regarding the adjustment procedure you generally start your low and high mixture screws at one turn from seat, or slowly turn them in all the way until they bottom out and then back them out one full turn. You will adjust the high speed mixture screw at full throttle and get the median point between too rich (loads up) and too lean (dies out). You will want to do the same thing with the idle mixture screw, just adjust at idle rpm. You will also adjust the low idle mixture screw to give you a smooth transition from idle to throttle up. Once this is obtained, you adjust the third or idle speed screw low enough so the chain does not turn at idle rpm but high enough so the saw doesn't cut off. Hope this gets you going.

start by synchronizing your throttle plates. Honda calls the next step the "idle drop procedure". u need to know if you have fuel adj. screws or air adj. screws. fuel screws will be on engine side of carb slide, air screws will be on airbox side of carb slide. start leaning out mixture, (turn in fuel screw, turn out air screw. idle will increase so keep adjusting idle back to spec.after each turn if needed. Adjust about 1/4 to 1/2 turn at a time on each carb until there is no change in idle, then richen up mixture by one half turn. If u sync throttle plates first then follow this procedure, there should be no hesitation when you "blip" the throttle, and after revving it should return to idle smooth,

Not knowing if you know anything about idle speed settings, idle mixture, etc., first check to see if all carburetor components are fully in place and are in good shape. A vacuum leak will cause the symptom you are describing. After doing that, adjust the idle stop screw. If it just won't idle even after doing that, take out the idle mixture screw, blow out the screw hole with compressed air, and gently screw in this screw all the way in. (DO NOT FORCE it.) Then open it 2.5 turns. Adjust this screw for a good strong idle while adjusting the idle SPEED with the idle stop screw. Get assistance if you don't know how to do this stuff. Good luck.

ADJUSTING THE IDLE SPEED AND MIXTURE
On some float-type carburetors, you can adjust the air-fuel mixture and engine speed at idle. Check for an idle speed screw designed to keep the throttle plate from closing completely, and an idle mixture screw that limits the flow of fuel at idle. If your carburetor contains these screws, proceed below.
  1. With the engine off, remove the air filter and air cartridge.
  2. Locate the idle mixture screw and turn it clockwise until the needle lightly touches the seat. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1-1/2 turns.
  3. If your carburetor has a main jet adjustment screw at the base of the float bowl, turn the screw clockwise until you feel it just touch the seat inside the emulsion tube. Then, turn the screw counterclockwise 1 to 1-1/2 turns. Replace the air cleaner assembly and start the engine for final carburetor adjustments.
  4. Run the engine for five minutes at half throttle to bring it to its operating temperature. Then, turn the idle mixture screw slowly clockwise until the engine begins to slow. Turn the screw in the opposite direction until the engine again begins to slow (image A). Finally, turn the screw back to the midpoint.
  5. Using a tachometer to gauge engine speed (image B), set the idle speed screw to bring the engine to 1750 RPM for aluminum-cylinder engine or 1200 RPM for engine with a cast-iron cylinder sleeve.
  6. With the engine running at idle (image D), hold the throttle lever against the idle speed screw to bring the engine speed to "true idle." Then, repeat the idle mixture screw adjustments from Step 4 to fine-tune the mixture (image C).

You may have a bad control valve or regulator. Did you adjust the idle properly?

1. Disconnect the connector on top
2. Adjust idle to around 650-700k rpm
3. Reconnect the electrical connection

After reconnecting, the idle should jump up around 700-750k rpm.
The idle screw is fail safe setting in case the ecu cannot set the idle. The rpm's set by the idle screw are supposed to be below the ecu/stock idle.

If this doesn't work, you may have a dirty or bad Idle Air Adjuster and/or Air Regulator. For information on cleaning that, you can refer to this page http://s95014253.onlinehome.us/63104/157335.html

You can test the IAA by supplying power to the plug with the car off. Listen for any clicks or humming. That will signify that it still may be working but is possibly stuck. The Air Regulator is for high idle for warming up your car. It has a bi-metal spring inside that rotates a disc closing off an airway to bring idle to normal after a couple minutes. If it dies it will stay open and give you permanent high idle. If it gets clogged usually no high idle for warm up.
You can remove it and peer through the end. If you see a thin sliver of light, it's open. Connect 12 volts + & -, wait a few minutes and see if it's now closed. If not, it's likely dead. It can be opened and cleaned if that's the issue.
