We removed starter from a 1983 Honda Goldwing 1100. Is there a special trick to installing it? When trying to replace starter it goes in except for the last half inch.

Q- Is there a tentioner fot the chain.

With my finger I can pull the chain down 1/2 inch, when i let go it moves back up 1/2 inch so it does not line up with sprockets

To replace the starter on my 1100 Goldwing I bought a 100lb magnet to hold the sprocket closer to the outside of the case. After a couple of tries I got the starter installed.

The starter is the tensioner, there is an internal besides that as well. This is one of the most difficult out there that is for sure. You may have to rotate the engine or starter gear subtly to get everything to line up. Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Some of the aftermarket splines don't match the sprockets. remove the sprocket that is the case and make sure it goes onto the starter splines.

Have an "81" and have had the starter out (rebuilt it once, replaced it once and have rebuilt that one since) first time I followed the manual and pulled the engine first. Never again!
1. Get some strong help.
2. Put it on the side stand.
3. Jack the other side of the bike up to increase the angle of the bike. That will cause the sprocket to drop out to where the shaft of the starter will slide in.
4. Put the strong help where they can make sure the bike cannot drop on you, you won't like it.
5. Slide the starter in as far as it will go, and let the bike down to normal stance.
6. Finish driving the starter into place and replace the bolts.

Sounds to me like the sprockets arent ligning up right or maybe it's not going in straight.
either way starters can be a B!tch
good luck with it.

Why is there oil coming out of my starter on my 1983 honda goldwing 1100

The oil seal on the end of the starter is leaking or the o-ring between the starter and the case is torn. If there is oil in your starter you may have to replace it. If the o-ring is ripped , pull out the starter replace the o-ring and put the starter back in it is just leaking around your starter.

What are the steps to change the starter on a 1983 goldwing 1100a aspencade( any tricks?)

first step... do not pull engine...remove battery and starter connections, if you have any skid bars on the left front, remove them. remove shift peg, remove front covers on that side, remove starter bolts, pull starter out, gear will stay with chain inside cover and drop down a bit, don't be scared. If you have bought an aftermarket starter watch that the spines and gears may not match, put the matching gear in the chain inside the case and put some assembly grease to hold it center in case while you install the new starter. It does take some self control but way more easier than pulling engine.

I need a guide to tell me how to replace the starter on a 1983 1100 Goldwing.

I looked around and wasn't able to find a free PDF service manual for your bike. My usual freebe sites don't list yours. Try your local library. Often guys will donate manuals to the library. Below are two places you can buy manuals. You should be able to find one for your exact bike there.

Google " repair manuals honda " OOPS! I found one >

Brushes in starter

Yes. It can be done. The starter motor is located outside the engine block so it should be easy to take it out. from there, you may disassemble the starter motor and replace the carbon brush as you wish.
