Starting Issue I have a 2001 SV650S, and on occasion has major issues starting. I hook it up to an Optimate 4 when not in use so the battery is in good condition. What happens is, I'll turn the ignition on, when I come to fire it up, the starter struggles like crazy, and the lights on the dash go out (when I let go of the starter switch, they come back on, but like when you've just turned the ignition on, petrol light comes on etc). I have had this issue just after unplugging it from the Optimate (last night to be precise), so I'm now at a loss as to what to do!

I have 2 batteries (1 is brand new), both have been tested and are in good condition

  • coolkitty597 Jul 31, 2009

The battery was tested under a load and was putting out 12V at 3k revs, headlights on full beam and the brakes on. This model doesn't have a kick start

You have a bad battery I believe. if its at least 3-4 years old replace it automatically. If newer, maybe you could test try another battery.

You say the starter struggles? You don't have a kick start? Also, how exactly were the bateries tested? You can't just put a voltmeter on it and expect a valid reading-battery needs to be under a load when tested.

measure battery voltage with lights and accessories on but the engine off. That should be a good test. Voltage should still be at least 12-13 vdc. I can't say you might not have a starter problem but hte battery is cheaper to repair. Lets make darn sure battery is 100%

Problem starting sv650s

remove spark plugs from block, place tread on block, turn over engine, best if blue, white ok, orange spark is bad, if you are getting orange, your ignition system is weak, usually the coil, and needs to be replaced. also make sure to take out the plugs after attempting to start, andmake sure they are wet and getting fuel.

Leaking battery

Yuasa batteries are expensive but with good reason. They are extremely high quality and follow the old adage 'you get what you pay for'.
Cheap batteries appear initial good 'value' but the extra investment will pay dividends long-term, if properly maintained, your Yuasa will last many years.

If you suspect the liquid is acid, neutralize it with some baking soda just to be sure. You don't want that dripping onto anything metal or pain, causing damage.
Once you have it neutralized, wash it out with water.

It sounds like you ride infrequently and bike may have periods of serveral weeks on occasion without being ridden.

My recommendation would be to install a quality replacement (like the OEM Yuasa) then purchase a battery maintainer that you can plug in while bike is not being used. Good maintainers are Optimate and Battery Tender. (I have both myself - I really like the Optimate 4.) Both of these come with a waterproof 'pigtail' harness that you can permanently connect to the battery - then when you put the bike away, you can simply connect up to it without having to remove anything.

Hope this is helpful.

Good Luck!!

Back fire on suzuki sv650s

you have to tune your engine using the following ways.
1. tune your fuel air screw for optimal settings.(in most cases inappropriate tuning is the reason for backfires)
2. check and clean your spark plug and the wire connecting your spark plug.
3. check the voltage levels of the battery. if they are low then recharge them.

F! error Cagiva Raptor 1000

When mine did this it was a spade connector which came loose - best bet to check and clean all connectors,
Optimate use seems to make it happen more so I'd start with all the connectors that you can see in and around the battery box

also check out raptorchapter 'dot' org 'dot' uk (for 650 and 1000 raptors) theres another owner on there with similar problem

Wondering Battery?

it could be a battery issue, or a starter issue.

you can check if it is the starter by jump starting your vehicle. if it start, then the starter is ok. if it does not start even with a good battery, then the starter is at fault.

tnx 4 using fixya,
