Question about Harley Davidson FXDWG Dyna Wide Glide Motorcycles

1 Answer

I have a FXDWG (1999) that when I try to start it there is a loud click coming from the starter i believe, then all the lights go off. I disconnect the battery terminal and the lights come back on but the same thing happens when i ttry to turn it over. Any ideas, bad starter, relay or what?

Loud click and buzz when trying to start car

your starter is shot. The click and the ting sound is your bendex not engaging properly. You can catch car on fire, or mess up your computer if you keep trying to start it. Be sure to disconnect the battery when you change it. Good luck

I have a 2000 Dyna Wide harley davidson, I think my solenoid my have went bad, Try to start bike all it does is click, and I saw smoke come out by tank and forks like were the wires go under on the back...

You have two things that click when you attempt to start your bike. One, is the starter relay. It should be located behind the electrical cover on the left side of your bike and it makes a very soft, almost inaudible, click when you press the start button. The other is the starter solenoid. This is actually part of the starter and it makes a very loud click. Now, which one is it?

If the softer click, replace the starter relay. It looks exactly like any other relay, a one inch black plastic cube. If the starter solenoid is the problem, you probably need to replace the two large contacts in the solenoid.

MAKE SURE YOUR TRANSMISSION IS IN NEUTRAL. Then look at the end of your starter from the right hand side of your bike. There is a five sided plate held on with three small allen screws. Use a 3mm allen wrench to remove the screws and the plate. There is a large plunger and a long spring behind the plate. Pull the plunger out and look at the large copper contacts in the solenoid. If they are burned, you need to replace them. You can get a kit from your local Harley dealer or from an aftermarket supplier. The contacts are not difficult to replace. You can do it without taking the starter off the bike, just disconnect the battery first.

Good Luck
Steve

My 1999 Chrysler town and country doesn't start cold. I can hear loud click coming from the starter motor when you try it and after several attempts and moving the key in all directions it starts.

This is the sign of a fulty starter, loose battery terminal or a dead cell in the battery. Start with the easy step first....tighten the terminals, have the battery tested and then the starter. Good luck

The loud click is probably the solenoid but it's possible it is not transferring power from the incoming (battery) line to the output (starter) line. Can you attach a test light on starter and have someone try "start" ? Light should come on, bad starter. If light does not come on then you are looking for that problem.

Do you hear a fairly loud 'click' when you try to start? That should be the solenoid for the starter that is trying to work. You need a test light or voltmeter to check what is happening to the starter itself. When the solenoid clicks, it is pulling a very heavy electrical contact closed which applies 12 volt power to the starter motor. Check the large terminal on the solenoid that has the + battery cable attached--the test light should light before and during any attempt to start (the meter should indicate 12 volts). If the light goes out during the start attempt, clean the battery terminals and check the condition of both cables. If still no start, test the starter side terminal of the solenoid--the light should come on only when start is attempted. If it does, the starter is bad. If you get no light at all, the solenoid is bad. If the battery negative cable is connected to the car body, check for a broken or loose cable that runs from the car body over to the engine. Hope this helps!

Loud click when I press the start switch 1989 LS650 Savage

The loud click kinda indicates the starter is the problem. A fainter click would implicate the starter relay as the failing component.

Since I can't hear the noise, I would say first check the starter for 12 volts from hot to ground when the ignition is in start position. If you get 12 volts upon this test, then it's most likely the starter relay.

Then check the relay for continuity with starter disconnected from it and the ignition in start position. To find these components, just trace the red cable from the battery.

More info, let me know.

Charlie

P.S. The lights flicker because the battery voltage is dropping when the starter tries to turn over.

if it clicks one loud time then its maybe the starter. if its several little fast clicks then the battery is just dead enough not to turn the car over
