You will need at least a cheap voltmeter/multimeter. Then I can help you better.

  • Paul Blessing Jul 30, 2009

You never let me tell you how to test battery. You can not test by measuring voltage on battery unless you are putting a load on it.

  • Paul Blessing Jul 30, 2009

Your meter needs to be able to read 12 volts dc. With the key off put the red(positive) meter lead to the positive side of the battery and the black(negative) meter lead to the negative(ground) side of hte battery. You should read at least about 13 volts dc. With the leads still on the battery, start the bike. You should see an increase in the voltage with the bike running. Try that.

If the wires attach to the gas tank they must be for the fuel level sensor if you have one or possibly a fuel pump,

  • Paul Blessing Aug 01, 2009

Yeh. I'm sure that must be repaired either way for safety, Hopefully that will correct problem. Sounds like a dealer part. Google around entering the make/model/year of bike and parts suppliers and also what is that part.

1985 xv700 virago, one turnsignal not working, flashing fast on display, bulb and socket good

1. turn on the flasher and see if the socket has power by putting a hooking up a voltmeter to the socket and the voltmeter voltage should cycle just like the flashing light in the dash; if it does not cycle then the socket has a connection problem; trouble shoot the socket to see why it has no power. Make sure that the socket contacts are clean and check the wire(s) for damage (may be cut, broken, or shorted).
2. make sure that the bulb is the correct number for the bike and light type (all bulbs are not the same). Test the bulb by connecting it directly to the battery with a set of jumper wires and it should light; connect the metal case to the negative(-) on the battery and the center terminal(s) to the positive(+) on the battery to make the bulb light. If the bulb does not light then it is bad.

I have a virago xv500, had new battery put on it 3 days ago, starts first thing in the moring , when i try to start it when the engine is hot it drains battery and wont start

Hi, Paul some bikes get "Sun Stroke" after running fine in the morning then shut off and parked in the sun for a couple of hours on a hot day. You get back on the bike hit the starter button and nothing happens or the engine turns over but will not fire. Then you put the bike in the shade for 20-30 minutes and it fires up no problem.
The primary reason for this phenomenon is faulty wire connections in the Starter and/or Ignition Circuit. You may have a wire connection/component that makes just enough contact when cool to start and run the bike, but when parked and exposed to direct sunlight heat causes expansion and creates an "OPEN" in the circuit not allowing the bike to start. You move the bike into the shade for a few minutes, the temperature goes down allowing the connection to contract and make better contact and suddenly "it's a miracle" the bike starts. I know what you're thinking that Gremlin could be anywhere, and you would be right in that assumption, you can take your bike to a dealer, spend tons of "DRACHMA" only to receive validated nervous emotions the next time you park in the sun, then 1 week later it doesn't start. Start by doing a ground check:
Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary. Check all common grounds for the same suspects.
The secondary reason your bike may get "Sun Stroke" is vapor lock although this is a rare scenario it does happen.

I have a 1985 xv700 virago. one of my plugs are misfiring. I had issues with my original one. yamaha dealer told me i needed a new cdi box. He sold me a used cdi igniter box from a non running 1985 Yamaha...

follow the plug wire back to the coil and see if there are any breaks, if not might switch coil with the other one and see if the other plug now misfires, if so replace the coil, most cdi problems are not intermittent, typically they either work, or they dont.

Yamaha Virago XV700 - 1987 Seat Removal

Most Yamaha models have 2 bolts holding the seat on, usually located between the top shock mounts and the side covers. You should be able to find them without too much trouble, but remember- they are metric. Hope this helps.
