I hooked the battery cables up backwards and it blew the magneto hooked the cables back the right way and it blew the magneto again the model#21R707-0011 10.5hp 344c

This doesn't sound like a car, but more like a riding mower or something.

Anyway, is it the magneto that "blew" or a fuse for the magneto? You don't mention that you replaced the magneto....

Some manufacturers incorporate reverse protection diodes that are supposed to cause a fuse to blow if the battery is hooked up backward. Unfortunately, the diode often becomes a short circuit when this happens and would explain why a primary fuse would blow again, even when the battery is hooked up correctly. If you have a wiring diagram for what you're working on, I'd suggest checking for a diode connected near the battery cables. If you don't have a wiring diagram for this, you're probably going to need one.

So you don't have echo

No Spark can be one of 3 faults.
The wire to the spark plug is either shorted somewhere along its length. An open circuit along the wire coming out of the magneto or
the magneto is not generating a spark.
Best way to test for a spark is to use a neon test lamp.
Hold one end and bring the other end close to high voltage wire under test. Test on your running car first.
Trace the HV wire back to the magneto on side of engine. rotate engine by hand to get magneto to generate a current. Remove spark plug to allow engine to rotate easier without compression.
The high voltage is generated from a coil inside magneto assembly.
Good Luck

What is the correct gap between the magneto core and flywheel and is there a timing procedure?

Hi Rex

I set them up to around 10 thousands of an inch ( about 0.25 mm) .
I use a piece of brass shim as a spacer. A piece of thick plastic material would be OK (or some thin cardboard). You need a bit of non magnetic material which does not stick to the magnet. The actual gap is not too critical, however you do not want the flywheel to rub on the pole piece when it is running, neither do you want the gap to be too great as the magnetic coupling will not be good.
Good luck with the repair, make sure the flywheel is not going to rub.

Changing from Pos ground generating system to Neg ground 1 wire alternator system. need wiring diagram. At present the minute the key is turned the engine starts tuning over. wiring had been...

It would seem best to just remove all of the original low voltage wiring completely. You won't need the 'cutout' device any more as the diodes in the alternator will replace that function. Does the ignition switch have a 'start' position? If not, then suggest finding a normally-open push button switch for a start button. Is the ignition system a points/coil/capacitor unit or a magneto. If a magneto, it needs to be grounded with a kill switch. If the points/coil system, then the key should apply power to the coil connection through a doubled resistor when running. You will also need a 12 volt battery of course. Change the starter solenoid to a 12 volt unit. The starter will draw about double the current used at 6 volts, but will likely survive if you don't 'grind' the engine. Depending on the tractor, there may be a 12 volt starter available that will fit. If you have an ammeter, it should be in series with the battery connection at the starter solenoid and the ignition, lights, and any other light loads (never in series with the large starter cable). That should cover most of your concerns, but understanding what I have written may be a concern. I don't have a wiring diagram specifically, so I hope this helps!

Fresh charged battery but no lights come on when I turn key almost like blades are engaged but they arent.

Most riding lawnmowers use a magneto type of unit to generate the power to run the lights which means that when you turn the light switch on you will not get any lights unless the engine is running. So...start the engine and then turn the light switch on. If still no lights check that the light(s) are not burned out or that you have a loose wire to them or...on some units...there may have been a short somewhere and there may be an inline fuse holder in one of the wires to check. If none of that works then you may have a bad magneto that is part of the engine...a magneto type unit is also used to give the electricity for the spark plugs in most cases.

I have a 1979 harly davidson soprster, i have re

There is no need for a resistor of any kind. The light should be run with the feed coming from the power breaker and the ground side connected to the “A” post of the Generator. Resistors were added by some companies to prevent the light from flickering at low RPMs. If the Generator is working properly there is no need for a resistor. Be sure to polarize the generator properly as failing to polarize the generator is the most common cause of a Gen light that won't go out.

loud your battery again and see if ti keep running it down--if yes check the battery loading size it suppose to be around 12-13.
less then 9-10 in most cases it's the alternator cause another thing is your battery could be out of work
