2006 Yamaha R1 engine check light turns on at hi speed (only in 6th gear @285km) but is off again when riding the bike mid range. what could this be no issues with the performance as well as smooth idle so not sure where to start.

Need to check the ECU for registered malfunction.You must take it to a dealer's workshop.Engine warning light means that a sensor is not working properly.

Try the air filter first (make sure it's clean). The needle valve on your carb slider could be bent, or not seated correctly or just set wrong. If you have a power exhaust valve, it could be set wrong or malfunctioning as well. Good luck.
