Theres a one way bearing on the back of the flywheel that comes off with 3 phill. screws.you have to whack them with a firm hit of a steel tip (the interchangable flat, phill.,tips for a driver) to loosen for replacing this one way bearing that will somtimes go out,BE SURE IF YOU JUST HAPPEN TO CHANGE THE BATTERY THAT THE POS-NEG POLES ARENT OPPOSITE OF THE ONE YOU HAD,THIS WILL STILL SPIN THE STARTER BUT BACKWARDS ON A KAW. AND WONT LOCK THE ONE WAY STARTER BEARING AT THE FLYWHEEL,IVE DONE IT BEFORE AND SEEN THIS MANY TIMES,NO HARM YET THOUGH,hope thats it brother, wallace

When trying to start my car its making a whinning noise and wont crank what could it be?

If the starter is spinning and not engaging the flywheel to start the car, suspect a defective starter drive clutch and starter replacement will be required

My starter just spins and don't touch flywheel took it off they said it was good, also checked flywheel could teeth on starter b wore out?

you will see damaged teeth on the pinion of the starter
there is an adjustment of the pivot that allows for the pinion teeth to be properly engaged before the contacts are bridged in the solenoid to provide power to the armature to spin it
there could be a problem in the solenoid where a contact is damaged allowing for the completion of the circuit before the pinion is fully engaged
I don't know who "they " are but unless "they " know how to properly test a starter motor I would be taking it to an accredited auto electrician for a test
A test involves checking the pinion movement for correct engagement, checking for correct current flow through the armature commutator bars using a growler, checking the brush length, checking the bushes and placing a torque gauge meter on the pinion teeth to check cranking torque and the correct operation of the pinion over run clutch ( which in your case may not be driving the pinion teeth )
It is not tested just to put battery wires across the terminals to see if it spins

My truck motor wont turn over? The started is kicking in ' but the motor does not turn to start?

You say your starter is kicking in..is it spinning and not turning the engine over? If so you have a problem with the flywheel teeth or starter gears not engaging..if no spin just a click..your battery is to weak to turn engine or you starter selonoid or starter needs replaced...good luck..

Starter won't engage

check your flywheel & starter, one or both will be missing teeth, or the starter isn't "throwing out" yo engage flywheel

Starter works fine but won't crank engine. the pick up has to be given a push first before it starts

If the starter is spinning when you try to start but doesn't spin the engine over then you most likely have teeth missing off the flywheel ring gear. The facts that you say you have to push it and then it starts means the flywheel position changes and the starter has good teeth on the flywheel to engage. To confirm this next time the engine won't crank over remove the starter and look inside at the flywheel for missing flywheel teeth.

Will low voltage cause the starter to spin but not engage

Sometimes the starter will really mess up the teeth on the flexplate/flywheel. Try spinning the flexplate or flywheel a lil to get to some fresh teeth. There are a few ways to do this, rock the truck while in gear, turn the crank with a socket and breaker bar, maybe spin the flexplate/flywheel with a screwdriver... if you can see the teeth you will see the damage first hand, sometime you can "live" with the damage, other times you have to replace the flexplate/flywheel,,, much more work, that is why I said "live" with it. The starter will miss the "good" teeth sometimes...

Grinding noise when ignition is turned

THe starter engages the fly wheel and in the process turns the motor over to cause it to crank. The grinding can be a bad starter causing the gear to either not engage fully or not disengage. It can also indicate missing teeth on the flywheel from damage from starter. If the car cranks and grinding goes away it points to the starter solenoid not engaging properly.. pushing gear into contact with flywheel. I would recommend replacing the starter and you can replace it with a good mechanical knowledge and DIY.

Starter spins but will not engage flywheel...

Check the flywheel for areas of damaged teeth also. Broken teeth on the starter drive gear may inticate damage to flywheel also.

Cranks fine, won't "catch"

From what u describe, I believe u have a starter and possibly a flywheel problem. When u turn the key to start the car, the starter gear engages w/ the flywheel, turning the flywheel, which turns the engine over. It sounds like the teeth of the flywheel and starter are worn, (they should mesh together smoothly) which would make the grinding noise u describe. If this is the case, the flywheel and starter would need to be replaced, and its a labor intensive job, as engine and trans. have to be separated to remove/install the flywheel. The rrrrrrr sound could be the starter gear spinning but not engaging. The starter gear extends on a shaft, then engages the flywheel. It is possible the gear isn't moving forward on the shaft, just spinning w/out engaging, making the rrr sound. So, I would recommend u remove the starter and have it tested (many parts stores will do this for free) and check the teeth on the gear to see if they are worn or broken. U will also be able to see a portion of the flywheel after the starter is removed, and u should check the teeth on it also. Let me know what u find, hopefully it's just a starter problem, and the flywheel is ok.
