Question about 2006 Honda VTX 1300 S

My 2006 vtx 1300 after changing oil, air filter on max throttle position from exhoust pipes goes black smoke. What it could be?

Hi, Martynas your instrument gauges and lights can alert you to most electrical and engine issues they can not warn you about failed engine gaskets or seals so your engine has to resort to old fashion alert methods of colored "SMOKE SIGNALS" here is a breakdown of their meaning:
1. COLORLESS OR SLIGHTLY BLUE SMOKE on start-up means your air/fuel mixture is at the right composition and everything is well burnt in your combustion chamber.
2. BLUE SMOKE on start-up is usually caused by failed valve seals dripping oil into the combustion chamber when the engine is not running.
3. YELLOW OR BROWNISH SMOKE at start-up means your air/fuel mixture is too lean. Too lean means that there is low fuel but high air mixture in your combustion chamber.
4. WHITE SMOKE on start-up may be caused by a blown head gasket allowing coolant to enter the combustion chamber and may start dripping out of the exhaust pipes or mufflers. Smoke while riding is usually caused by worn out or damaged valves, seals, guides, pistons, rings, or cylinder walls.
5. BLACK SMOKE on start-up is usually caused by too much fuel in the combustion chamber this can be due to air/fuel mixture adjustment too rich, accelerator pump improperly adjusted, faulty choke/enrichner or not in the off position, air filter dirty and clogged, faulty carburetor float needle and seat, pilot jet too large, fuel injectors leaking, smoke while riding is usually caused by the main jet being too large or a damaged carburetor.
It should be noted that aggressive or abnormal throttle operation will cause these conditions to manifest themselves exponentially.

2012 1700 classic vulcan exhaust


The VTX 1800 is fuel injected which requires the additional sensors (oxygen, throttle position, etc). However the VTX 1300 is carbureted, which takes the sensors out of the equation. If you are changing the exhaust with a:
Slip on-muffler
  • remove old mufflers, and slip on new ones
  • could add a better air filter, and you get a better sound, minimal power gain
Full Exhaust System
  • Remove old pipes from the cylinder heads (i.e. jugs) and use a rag to wipe off the seat and block the opening.
  • once both pipes have been pulled from the jugs, prep your new pipes with windex. Clean them well, finger oil and other gunk can cause bluing spots
  • Install the pipes, torque them in place, re-clean the pipes and use a chrome polish.
  • Purchase carburetor jetting kit, and either take it to a shop to do it, or you do it. If you have never re-jetted a carburetor before, I suggest you go to a reputable shop and get it done.
  • With the carb completed, a new air filter (high flow K&N is what I use - I have gone through the same exhaust system replacement procedure on my sled)
If you replace the exhaust without completing the carb/air cleaner, there is a very high probability that you will get backfires every time you ride. This will happen especially on deceleration, and will eventually blow out your valve seat, causing the engine to feel weak due to lost compression.

I installed a set of used cobra pipes on my 2006 vtx 1300. I should say now it hasn't been ridden in 2 yrs, just started occassionally. I started it up one day and white smoke started billowing out of the...


It seems the fuel has flooded through the carbs from sitting. it may need the carbs cleaned and new fuel in the tank, and a new air filter element, there is also a possibility fuel has made its way into the sump, so check the oil level, or change the oil if it is 2 years old.
This can all be caused by a leaking fuel tap, and the fuel getting old and leaving a residue in the tap and carbs

Bike is back firing and black smoke is comming out of pipes on indle. It has Cobra speedsters exhaust system.


Black smoke could be unburnt fuel .Check your air cleaner unit it may need a change .And also check that your plugs and you have a spark on all plugs .

great news you can only win with this. i bet if you pull a spark plug and look at it, it will be white or close to it. if so your motor is lean, it's not get the right amount of gas. when you put pipes on a bike it lets more air flow and you need to jet your carb. you local bike shop can help you get a jet kit and handle the install if needed. when done right you get more performance out of it. while you are look into jets get a high flow air filter or look into a hyper charger they come a jet kit, k&n air filter and the air scoop price isn't bad rsports.com/wps/Honda_OEM/HondaMC.asp?Type=13&A=474&B=25
