Question about Harley Davidson XL Sportster 883 Motorcycles

Looking for a wiring schematic for the turn signals, front and rear, for my 1979 Harley Ironhead. All the bulbs were replaced so I believe I have a grounding issue. Thanks

Hi, Dave before testing any electrical component in the Light Circuit it is "IMPERATIVE" that you have a fully charged battery of 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test because your battery may have 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amps causing the battery to be faulty and must be replaced, especially "AGM" batteries, also before diagnosing any turn signal/running light/parking light issue make sure the bulb is good and the light fuse has continuity with a test light. If you have replaced your OEM lights with one or all LED lights you are going to need a load equalizer.
If no turn signals work the cause could be a faulty turn signal module or the connector going to it, look for corroded, loose, or broken pins/sockets. Contact spray cleaner is great for removing corrosion.
If all four turn signals flash at the same time like hazard lights even though you only pressed one turn signal button then you have a LED light in the circuit and need a load equalizer that can be purchased from any motorcycle parts supplier.
If your speedometer does not function properly it will have to be fixed first because your turn signal module gets the data from the speedometer for normal turn signal function.
If your front turn signals don't work use a test light to check for power and ground at the bulb socket, then start backtracking the wiring through every wire connector to the turn signal switch/button and check for continuity, go all the way back to the fuse if necessary to find the cause of the malfunction.
If your rear turn signals don't work check your rear fender wiring harness connector first for corroded, broken, loose pins/sockets, power, and a good ground, the harness connector is usually located under the seat on the front of the rear fender then keep tracing the wiring look for obvious harness damage caused by the rear tire.
If you still can't find the malfunction backtrack from the rear fender wiring harness connector.
If one side does not work you could have a faulty turn signal switch or module check for continuity.

Brake light switch

Hi Jake, always check fuses and bulbs first for broken filaments. Then check the connection at the rear fender wiring harness, inspect for corroded, broken or loose pins. Use a dab of dielectric grease and repair as necessary. Check your brake relay if you have one , check your brake light switches for continuity, some models rear turn signals were single filament bulbs only, no running light. If all else fails get out your test light and start tracking the power wire from the harness connection. For a free wiring diagram please visit the website below and good luck:

Phase 7 install

Hi George, always check fuses and bulbs first, you could have a faulty turn signal module or a bad turn signal button/switch, remove it from the switch housing and check for continuity, check your wiring and connections from the turn signal switch to the turn signal module with a testlite. Make sure all wires are not worn or pinched and connector pins are not corroded, broken, or loose. For a free wiring diagram please visit the website below. Good luck and have nice day. 1974 Harley Davidson SPORTSTER TURN SIGNAL WIRING diagram just the turn signal diagram please

I can help you with the wiring diagram but it will be the complete diagram. I have never seen just a turn signal only type wiring diagram. But, there's nothing to a '74 model Ironhead turn signal system.

All the wires for the system were gray but had these little "colored rubber bands" on the ends of the wires near the signal lights. The violet bands were for the left side and the brown bands were for the right side turn signals

Now, I cannot send the wiring diagram through this forum as it will not allow for an attachment. If you will contact me directly, I'll send you a wiring diagram as a jpeg attachment via e-mail. My address is wd4ity@bellsouth.net.

Good luck

When i turn my 1997 sporster xl 1200s on,all the lights come on but the rear marker light.but the rear turn signals work. need to know ,why my head- light and front marker lights work plus my tail light,...

According to the schematic I'm looking at, your 1997 model Sporty came with front marker lights but not rear marker lights. To make sure, take the lens off of your turn signal light in the rear. Take the bulb out. Now, does the bulb have one or two filaments? If it only has one, then you don't have marker lights.

Let me know what you find.
