Hi Ed, perform the following tests:
1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12.5 volts or better after charging.
3. Hook up battery positive cable, then with your multimeter on the milliamp scale connect one lead to the negative battery post and the other lead to the ground cable. Meter should read 3 milliamps or less, 10 milliamps with a radio, 15 milliamps with radio and CB. If your meter reads higher you need to isolate the circuit by pulling fuses and circuit breakers one at a time and observe meter for drop in aprerage then get out your test light and track down the short in that circuit.
3. Make sure all connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at BOTH ends.
4. Hook up volt meter to battery and start engine, if meter falls below 9.5 v while cranking replace battery.
5. With engine running at 3600 RPM battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
6. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator at crankcase by front of primary cover.

8. With ohm meter, one lead grounded, touch alternator pin meter should read infinity, if not replace stator.
9. With ohm meter, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms on 1989 and later models. 0.2 to 0.4 ohms 1988 and earlier models, if not replace stator.
10. With volt meter set on AC scale, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read
16 to 20 volts AC for every 1000 RPM'S 1989 and later and 19 to 26 volts AC for every 1000 RPMS. If not replace rotor.

My battery is good and i road it for bout 2 hrs then came to stop and now it wont stay running unless i jump start it


You may need to clean connectors on battery wires ,or replace a fuse. The charge depleating could also be caused by a bad stator, stator wire conection or voltage regulator. after battery is charged test volts at battery while running, they should raise when rpms are increased to 1500 or 2000 or so, idle voltage may be 12 volts with rpms raised volts should go up to as much as 14.8 or so if all is well.if not keep looking for the problem from volt reg. back to stator .also stator output is AC and regulator output is DC.

My battery wont charge and I just bought it

Two possibilities:
  • rectifier / regulator combo (most likely);
  • corroded, burned, loose connection from the stator to the regulator (likely);
  • faulty stator (least likely).
The stator would be producing relatively high AC voltage while revving the bike. The stator output AC voltage are fed to the rectifier / regulator through 3 white wires. Check calls for testiing for the presence of the AC voltage on any pairing of the white wires before and after the connector before the voltage regulator. Check on the regulator calls for checking the battery voltage when revving the bike (14.5 VDC).

Battery issues

Two (2) major components responsible for charging the battery are:
  • stator - produces the AC voltage;
  • rectifier/regulator combo - converts the AC voltage to DC voltage and regulates it according to the of condition of the battery and the demand of the Raptor's electrical parts.

then u need a new stator and or regulstor. If u change a stator always put a new regulator on.

The charging system is not working properly. With


Chk the charging voltage at the battery posts. Should be between 13.6 to 14.2 The lower the voltage the hugher the amps. if at 13,6 it is charging heavy. It may not be your charging system. If it shows 12 volts it is charging max output, and at 15 it isn't doing anything.. I would put my money on the battery being no good..

Battery keeps going dead

To your query, there are 2 major components of the charging system:
  • stator - left side of the engine itself;
  • regulator - right side, below the seat; would be behind the chrome cover below the battery.

A common problem with a VStar is burned, pitted or corroded terminal pins/connectors from the stator to the regulator.

Stator keeps burning out on my suzuki 1500 c90 2005


Battery is good place to start, have had chg problems on both sides, last Stator i installed was fron Ricks Stators, and I done away with plug in (it had been hot before) used solder and shrink tubing, also had to correct a B problem by running new wire with fuse inline and replaced Gnd wire to eng Hsg this worked for about 1 year, then had an episode with Rectifier/Regulator, Used same brand to replace and extended wiring to mount in front of battery so it could get more air, and it charges better than it ever did, The c90 has some flaws in the ground connectors that i feel caused my problems (corrosion

you might have a charging system problem without the bike charging system it is only running on the battery power, and once the battery is too low to fire the ignition it will die, check your fuses and power cables to the battery, selenoid and starter, then check the regulator/rectifier, could also be your stator or rotor, only a few possabilities but you will find it.

Faulty regulator rectifier- can't start the bike


I have a '07 C90T.
I have just replaced my stator. I replaced the reg/rectifier earlier this year. I replaced the battery one year ago in October.

I firmly believe what started the problem. Two guys that I told I didn't need help, but they pressured me to let them help. They hooked a battery backwards to my bike. A lot of people believe that's what shortened the life of the rectifier and stator.

But keep this in mind. The connections for the regulator/rectifier are not waterproof. I had done a lot of rainy riding and I first found a burnt connector on the discharge side of the reg/rect. My mechanic told me I needed to replace the reg/rect so I did but I soldered the wires and made them waterproof. I didn't do this on the stator side of the reg/rect and a few months later, when the bike quit charging again, I found that connector burnt, so I cut it out and soldered and waterproofed it.

Two days after we got back from a 700 mile round trip to Red River, NM, my bike quit charging again. This time though, I have a voltage meter on the bike, so I was aware of the problem before the bike could strand me someplace. Get one of those btw.
When I checked the old stator after I replaced it, I found the stator good but the pulse signal generator bad. It's required that you replace both btw. You have to, they are joined at the grommet.

Ok well, the battery cost $60 last year and I replaced it myself.
The reg/rect cost $140 through my mechanic and I replaced it myself.
Got the stator online for $173 shipped and they advertise a better stator that puts out 20% more power.
Not counting little things like solder, tape, heatshrink and such, I'm out a little less than $375 on my charging system.
I hope it's a done deal.
Again, some think the problems began when the battery was hooked up wrong, but I lean to believe the sub-standard Suzuki connections may have a hand in this.
