Rocker arm specs


ROCKER ARM SUPPORT PLATE
Installing the rocker arms and rotating the engine with the valve
train loaded can result in bent push rods, damaged bushings
or a warped support plate.

To install the rocker arm support plate, both lifters of the
cylinder being serviced must be on the base circle (or
lowest position) of the cam.
Place the rocker arm support plate assembly into the rocker housing. Loosely install the four
rocker arm support plate bolts with flat washers.
Tighten the rocker arm support plate bolts in a cross pattern and alternately tighten
each of the four rocker arm support plate bolts just 1/4 turn. THEN continue turning the bolts in these increments until snug. THEN following the same sequence, tighten the bolts to 18-
22 ft-lbs (24.4-29.8 Nm).

THEN install and alternately tighten the two bolts to secure breather assembly to 90-120 in-lbs (10.2-13.6 Nm).

Excessive pressure in crankcasd


One thing to check, pull your air cleaner cover & filter (if stock setup) start the bike and see if the rocker box breathers are blowing out air like they should, I have seen where people have put too much thread locker or silicone sealer and blocked off the breather fittings in the rocker boxes, when those pistons come down that pressure has to go out somewhere.
It could be a stuck oil pressure relief valve in the cam plate.
Also, check your oil after an oil change, about 100-150 miles.
If it's really dark from that short time, you might be getting compression blowing by your rings.
You didn't give your mileage, but a 14 year old engine might be about ready for a ring job.

How do i change a cam cover gasket on a 1999 harley davidson fat boy


Replacing the gasket on the cam cover of your Fat Boy is not a job for the faint hearted. It''s quite complicated because of the fact that you must get the pressure off the cam to get the cam cover back on once you get it off. You must also be very careful as to not change the camshaft timing with either the pinion gear or the breather gear.

If your Fat Boy has stock pushrods in it, you'll have to take the fuel tanks off, the air filter, and then take the rocker box covers off. Rotate the engine until you get one cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke with both valves closed. Pull the push rod tube expanders out collapsing the pushrod tube and take the 5/16" bolt at the right end of the rocker arm shaft out. Slide the rocker arm shaft out and remove the rocker arm and the pushrod. Do this on boht the intake and exhaust pushrods. Notice that the pushrods are color coded meaning that they go in a particular location. Do not get them mixed up. Do the same thing to the other cylinder. The purple colored pushrod goes to the rear exhaust, the blue coded pushrod goes to the rear intake, the yellow coded pushrod goes to the front intake, and the green coded pushrod goes to front exhaust.

Now, that you have all the pushrods out of the engine, take the bolts out of the tappet guides and remove them. Keep the tappets in their original bores, do not mix them up. Check the roller bearings on end of the tappets for any up and down play. If you find a worn tappet, it should be replaced. You can replace the gasket on the cam cover without removing the tappet guides but you must remove the pushrods to get the pressure off the cam. If you remove the tappet guides, you will need a pair of "alignment pins" to align the tappet guides with the camshaft upon reinstalling them. Torque the bolts to 100 inch pounds.

Now, remove the cover that covers the ignition timing unit in the nosecone. Mark the timing plate inside the cavity so that you can reposition it in exactly the same place when you go to put it all back together. Remove the timing plate and the timing "cup" behind it. Take all the bolts out of the timing cover. The cover is mounted on two large dowel pins. You can pry the oil pump side of the cam cover off just a bit with a large screwdriver. Then, use a thin putty knife to work the other side loose. YOU MUST HOLD THE CAM IN POSITION BY PUSHING INWARD ON IT AS YOU REMOVE THE CAM COVER. DO NOT ALLOW THE CAM TO COME FAR ENOUGH TO LET IT GET OUT OF TIMING WITH EITHER THE PINION GEAR OR THE BREATHER GEAR. IT MUST BE TIMED CORRECTLY. The bolts that hold the cam cover on are different lengths, remember where they go.

When you go to reinstall the cam cover, make sure you get all the bolts in the correct holes. Reinstall the tappet blocks if you took them out. Reinstall the pushrods, pushrod tubes, and rocker arms in the last cylinder that you removed them from. Torque the 5/16" bolt to 13-15 foot pounds. Wait for the tappets to bleed down and you can turn them with your fingers. Turn the engine until the other cylinder is at top dead center on the compression stroke. Reinstall the pushrods, pushrod tubes, and rocker arms on that cylinder. Again wait until the pushrods will spin with your fingers before rotating the engine.

Reinstall the timing cup and the timing plate in the timer cavity in the cam cover. Make sure you get the marks you put on the plate and the cover aligned precisely. Reinstall the rocker boxes with new gaskets. Torque the bolts to 80-100 inch pounds. Reinstall the fuel tanks.

Cam gears pulled out when changing gear box gasket trouble reinstalling due to tappets line cams up but front exhaust to tight to install


I'd be interested in knowing how the cam chest cover cam off changing a gear box gasket but.

In order to get the cams back in and to insure their proper timing, I'd put the rocker arms out. I'd pull them all out but you're free to do whatever you wish. Remove the top and middle rocker cover on the front clinder. Remove the large bolt that hold the lower plate and the rocker arm for the front cylinder in. Tap the rocker arm shaft out of the rocker arm and remove the rocker arm. You can then get your cam into position. Now, to get rocker shaft back in, rotate the engine until the front exhaust cam has the valve in it's closed position. Reinstall the rocker arm and shaft and torque the bolt to 25 foot pounds. Reassemble the upper and middle rocker box covers.

Replace rocker cover gaskets on 1990 fxr


To replace the upper rocker box gaskets is not too difficult. But, if you're replacing the gaskets between the head and the lower plate, this gets a bit more involved. You must remove the fuel tank as well.

To replace the top gaskets, simply remove the four bolts and lift the top and middle plate off the lower plate. The left rear bolt on the rear cylinder is the toughest bolt to get out. Sometimes there is a hole drilled in the frame to make access to this bolt easier. If not, you'll have to shorten a hex key wrench in order to get it out. With the top and middle plates our, replace the "umbrella valve" in the middle plate making sure you put it in from the correct side. Now place the outer gasket in the lower plate, the outer and middle gasket in the middle plate and set the top plate down on them. Wiggle the plates around a bit until you get them lined up properly with each other and tighten the top four bolts down a little at a time one each bolt until they're all tight. Torque to 80 inch pounds.

If you're going to remove the lower plate, first bring the piston of one cylinder up to top dead center on the compression stroke. Remove the spark plug and rotate the engine until both valves are fully closed. Remove the air filter assembly and backing plate. Remove the large bolts on the right side of the rocker arms Slide the rocker arm shaft out of the rocker arms one at the time and remove the rocker arm and it's pushrod. Notice that the rocker arm shaft have a recess ground into them. This is so the 5/16" acts as a lock to hold the shaft in place. It must be realigned on reassembly of the rocker plate. Once you get all the rocker arms and pushrods removed, you should have the pushrod tubes out as well. Remove the rest of the bolts and lift the lower rocker box plate. Clean the bottom of the rocker box plate and top of the head.

Assembly is the reverse of disassembly. Make sure you don't get the pushrods mixed up as they are all four of different lengths and will only work properly in their correct postitions. They are color coded for their proper positions. There is no adjustment of the pushrods.

Front exhaust -- GREEN
Rear Intake --- BLUE
Rear Exhaust --- PURPLE
Lower rocker box torque values are: 5/16" bolts 15-18 foot pounds
1/4" bolts 10-13 foot pounds
