I thought my starter was out but that didnt do it ... It just spins when I try to start it. 2001 yamaha v star 1100 classic. I charged my battery full charge...

Hi, Timothy your starter motor is not/was not the problem that dubious title goes to the starter drive/Bendix/clutch which is a separate component that is activated by the starter motor it is a mechanical gear driven part that engages the clutch pack to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Hi, Jodi and the usual suspects are:
1. Ignition Switch not in the "ON" position.
2. Engine Run Switch in the "OFF" position.
3. Discharged battery, check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
4. Bank angle sensor tripped and ignition/light key switch not cycled to the "OFF" position and then back to the "ON" position.
5. Security alarm needs a reset.
6. Starter control circuit, relay, or solenoid faulty.
7. Faulty starter button.
8. Electric starter shaft pinion gear is not engaging or over-running starter clutch slipping.

Starter turns but doesnt ingage motor to start, replace with new starter...does not torn motor over

That will be the starter clutch worn, it works on a roller bearing principal, after use on older bikes the clutch becomes worn and the bearings fail to return when the starter is activated causing failure to start

My 2002 yamaha vstar 1100 classic started and ran fine. now the starter just spins. it wont turn the engine over to start it. i already changed the battery. what could be the problem?

The one way clutch inside the motor is slipping. On the back side flywheel is a one way clutch that grabs the starter gear when the starter motor spins. It is designed to let go of the gear once the motor fires up. If the mating surface of the one way clutch and the starter gear becomes rough or chattered, it will no longer grab and turn the motor over. To repair this you will have to take off the crankcase cover and pull off the fly wheel to replace the one way clutch and the starter gear.

My star was running and starting fine last time i tried to start it, the starter is engaging but not turning engine. you can look in the oil hole and see everthing rotate but the crank any suggestions?

Your one-way clutch is not grabbing the machined cylindrical raised surface on the side of the large gear. Your starter spline plugs into a small gear that turns a large gear using a small gauge chain. The large gear has a machined surface on the side that jams the one-way clutch to turn the motor over. If the machined surface on the side of the gear is not smooth but chattered it will not grab and will need to be replaced. The actual one-way clutch may also have to be replaced also. You will have to do a careful inspection after you disassemble it.

Hi, Ataylor42779 and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or have an improper gap or are partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition.
3. Battery damaged or nearly discharged, should have 12.5 volts.
4. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
5. Throttle controls not adjusted correctly.
6. Water or dirt in the fuel system.
7. Water or dirt in the carburetor.
8. Faulty fuel pump.
9. Intake air leak.
10. Fuel tank vent hose and vapor valve plugged, or fuel line closed off, restricting fuel flow.
11. Enricher valve inoperative.
12. Engine lubricant to heavy (winter operation).
13. Ignition is not functioning properly (possible sensor failure).
14. Faulty ignition coil.
15. Valves sticking.
