On most vehicles covered by this manual, the fuel filter is located in the engine compartment, mounted to the firewall.
CAUTION
Do not use conventional fuel filters, hoses or clamps when
servicing fuel injection systems. They are not compatible with the
injection system and could fail, causing personal injury or damage to
the vehicle. Use only hoses and clamps specifically designed for fuel
injection systems.

It has injectors.Does it display any "C" codes when you crank it up? Did you ever tinker any Fuel Injection modules or sensors? Have you inspected/ or visual checked or try to replaced your fuel filter?
General Motors does not have a service interval for fuel injectors, though they make a injection cleaner if there is a drivability issue. Other companies suggest a injection cleaning interval of 48000 miles. I would suggest an in tank additive from a reputable company every couple of years.
The display is really FI as in Fuel Injection. The fuel injection computer has sensed a fault in the Injection system. You will need to ride the bike to a dealer and have them read the fault codes. It is probably just something minor. Major faults will not allow the bike to run. You will not hurt the bike if you ride it.
It is close to the fuel pump.If your VT is carn equipped then the fuel pump is near the fuel tank and the fuel filter is the middle if the fuel hose from the tank to the pump. If your VT is injection equipped then both pump and filter should be inside the tank. Remember that the fuel runs the filter only ONE way. There is an arrow on the filter showing that specific way.If not install the new exactly the same way the old one was.
