Hi i have a 2000 fxst harley i put new starter in my bike, than i couldnt get it started so i put new coil and plug wire it run good for 6 or 7 mile, now front plug has no spark.

If the motor was running ok before you changed the starter motor you must have damaged something. Changing a starter motor on a softail harley involves removing the oil tank and wiring. You must have damaged something while doing this. Logic dictates this. Check everything that you touched or moved.

How do you remove starter on 1986 softail custom

Hi Anonymous, it's pretty simple and sraight forward. Start by removing the seat and disconnecting and isolating the battery negative cable. Then remove the chrome end cap of starter, remove bracket that bolts to transmission and the battery cable on the starter and the green relay wire. WARNING!!!!! loosen and unthread completely but do not remove the two long starter thru bolts/studs. With both hands grab the starter on both ends and remove carfully, you do not want the starter to come apart, which happens all the time very easily. Good luck

What's involved in replacing electric starter on my 2004 fxsti

To remove the starter, disconnect the battery. Then drain the oil from the primary and remove the outer cover. Take the bolt out of the center of the starter jackshaft. When you pull the jackshaft out, the coupler may come with it. Make sure you mark the postion of the coupler as in must go back in the proper direction.

Then from the other side, remove the exhaust system and anything else that may be in your way of getting to the starter motor. You will probably have to remove the seat and take the bolts out of the oil tank on your softail. This is usually required so that you can lift the tank just enough to get the starter out. On some, I've seen the oil tank have to drained and removed to get the starter out. Once you get access to the starter, take the two large 5/16th bolts out and the starter comes out.

Good Luck

How to replace starter motor

Disconnect the battery, drain the primary case and take the outer primary cover off. Remove the screw in the end of the starter jackshaft. Pull the jackshaft out. If the coupling comes out with it. Make sure you mark it as it goes in in a particular direction.

Then from the other side, you're probably going to have to remove the exhaust system and take the oil tank loose. There are two large bolts that take a large allen wrench to get out. These are the starter bolts. You may have to lift the oil tank while working the starter out. Push come to shove, you may have to drain the oil tank, disconnect the hoses and take it out as well.

Good Luck
