If alternator is good, it should stay running with cable off. What is your battery voltage with & without engine running?

Where are you putting the jumper at? If you are puts the pos. on the Batt. and the neg. on the motor or an other grounding point that is not your battery the cable can be bad ( it will not look bad it will be in side one of the ends) or clean the end that goes to the ground for your car. One way to check it is put one neg. cable end on the battery and the other on somewhere on the motor, if it works replace the cable. if you are putting the cable somewhere else tell me.

How do I know if my the reason my 2005 Grand Prix GT won't start is bec I need a new battery?

The clicking sound is coming from the starter. It could be a faulty solenoid, or you could be right about the battery. If the battery is too weak, the starter will not engage. A quick test is to turn on the dome light. If the dome light dims slightly when cranking and you hear the clicks it is probably the starter. If the light goes out or dims greatly, it is probably the battery. If the battery is weak, it is a good idea to have the charging system tested as well. If the battery is older than three years, it is probably just the battery.

2008 Grand Prix always started fine. This morning I turned the key and the starter clicked, the trunk opened, the horn beeped then the "battery system failure" light appeared. I opened the hood,...

Huh??? You are using the dome lamp to measure the output of the alternator on an engine that won't even start??? I would like to see how that trick works! YOUR BATTERY IS LOW- plain and simple! The REASON your battery is low is a whole other problem that needs to be figured out. It could be that the battery itself is bad and will not accept a charge, or it could be that your charging system has a problem and cannot properly charge the battery (alternator, cables, connections, voltage regulator, etc.).

Please note that the light is telling you battery SYSTEM failure. This means that the battery and its supporting system (A.K.A. Charging System) needs to be tested/diagnosed. Nobody online can tell you exactly what the CAUSE of the problem is without TESTING the battery and charging system.

Please also note that the vehicle we are talking about is equipped with a PassKey III (PK3) security system. If you keep fooling around with it while there is low battery voltage, the system can lock out the starter and fuel system where you will have to reprogram your computer to get it started.

I have a 2004 Grand Prix GTP, it has around 97000 miles on it. When should I do a tune up? Also, it keeps saying "system charge failure" when I try to start it up.

I have a 2004 grand prix GT2, it has 197586 miles on it, RUNS LIKE A CHAMP. I change my oil with valvoline max life semi synthetic about every 5-8k miles. at 10k miles it says i have 53%oil life remaing so i just change it anyways. I have done the plugs about every 35k miles but i would recommend doing a FULL tune up about every 30k miles or so depending on your driving habbits, I drive about 2500 miles every 2 weeks and my car running in tip top shape. Personally i do all my own work on all my cars just because i know that i am not going to rip myself off. I have had the System Charge Failure come one a few time i just let it do its thing and it went off. Take your battery and Alternator up to autozone and have them test it. your serpt. belt could be slipping a little bit and not grabbing the pullys. I have had the problem where i blew a water line and coolent was all over the place, with the DexCool that GM requires it is a sylicone base and makes a mess everywhere. I am still finding it on my connectors, and around my electrical doohickies. Hope this helps

I have the same problem with my 2008 Grand Prix - replaced the batteries in both key fobs - they worked for a few days and quit working. Remote start does not work and both of the cigarette lighter chargers do not work either. I have recieved a "charging system failure" message on the readout screen as well. I have checked with 2 different mechanics and they are not sure what it is. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Charging system failure

Hello! The problem you are experiencing is most likely due to a fautly or malfunctioning alternator. You can take the car to any major auto parts store, and they can do a FREE charging system test which will tell you if your alternator is operating (and charging the battery) properly, as well as if your battery is accepting the incoming charge from the alternator.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Charging System Failure Light

This is a common problem with these cars. I have had it come on also a couple of times. No need to worry unless it stays on.
