Question about 2001 Harley Davidson FXDXT Dyna Super Glide T-sport

1 Answer

Bike ran great engine was at running temperature. Tried to restart after a short pause. Engine seemed to backfire when I hit the start switch. When I finally got it running would not stay running and had little power. Now it will not start. Plugs are dry as if not getting and fuel. Tank is full. Engine will crank but will not fire.

No it will not start at all now. I'm not sure what the vacuum op petcock is. Is it the fuel valve. with on off and reserve positions?

If you have the on off and reserve petcock or fuel valve then its not the old vacuum type. If battery good time to check basics so you see fuel squrting into the engine through the carb when throttle turned ? do you actually have spark at the plugs ?

I have a 99 hyundai elantra that dies and won'y restart when the engine is warm

Question, is the engine light on? I had a eagle talon with a similar mitsu engine as yours along with similar issues. I didn't have any overheating problems, nor did the gague seem any different. Also, the check engine light never came on. Like your car, when it was hot outside after driving or if the engine was at operating temperature it would not restart unless the engine cooled properly. I didn't have this issue so much in the winter or if I drove in the morning when it was colder, or on short trips that didn't raise the temperature of the engine much... mainly the summer was the worst, having to spend 20-40 minutes letting it cool down. The car would act like it would start but the coolant switch was making the car flood. The car had a high gas smell when attempting to restart the motor when hot due to this. Once it cooled it started perfectly, and ran perfectly fine. It was just restarting while hot that was impossible. My mechanic found the issue in less than 5 minutes saying it was somewhat common for the coolant switch to scale over due to cooling system neglect. The mechanic asked if I used tap water to fill the coolant system, which I did, and that in turn caused the minerals from the water to crust over the switch (along with my entire cooling system). That with 9 year old coolant and it being low helped to crust the switch over as well. A quick dip of the crusted over part of the switch in a household mineral remover (not the entire switch) and a coolant system flush (with comercial coolant system flush) fixed the issue and removed a LOT of mineral deposits too. Basically, it cost me $15 in labor plus the cost of materials to flush and fill the cooling system (and a case of beer for not screwing me over, which he could have easily). Hope that helps..

Why does my engine shut off after running for awhile with PTO engaged; will restart with PTO disengaged, but shuts off when i attempt to engage PTO?

Does this only happen when the engine is warm or at operating temperature or all the time even when cold? In older engines, a 'bad ignition coil' would fail when the engine warmed up and would not start again until cool or at ambient temperature.

Engine light

I've restarted my RSTD in Southwest U.S. temperatures well above 100F after short stops and experienced the same symptoms; choking the engine fully prior to a restart and releasing the choke after the engine fires seems to eliminate the stall. I suspect that heat rising from the engine boils most of the fuel from the carburetor bowls, and full choke pulls enough fuel back in to keep the engine running.

The owner's manual recommends 20W-40 in that temperature range. DO NOT USE ANY OIL MARKED "ENERGY CONSERVING", it contains molybdenum disulfide (a friction modifier) and may make the clutch slip. Tourers that drive long distances and operate in a wide range of temperatures generally recommend synthetic lubricants - Mobil Delvac 1, Mobil-1 SUV and Shell Rotella T Synthetic are names that keep popping up. Personally, I've been using Rotella-T (T6) synthetic for 111,000 miles (and used Mobil-1 0W-40 for 9,000 miles prior to that), and the bike has required nothing but routine maintenance. I've used the bike in temperatures from 11F to 118F (ambient) without negative effect.

I have a 1992 Suzuki GSX-R 750, that wont start

It is in the carbs, A bike will act like that when it needs to be jetted, most jets are not adj, but whoever built the bike, must have messed with the carbs, you can go back to factory settings, which is about 1 1/4 turns out, and try it, you might need to get new jets, you might want to try dyno jet kit, they are adj and work great.. I had to do my bike, the exhaust was burning my eyes, backfired, wouldn't run, factory jets didn't work. But I found a dyno jet kit on ebay, and it works great. But before you take the carbs off, take a piece of heavy paper and cut the air intake in half with the paper to see what it does, then cut by 1/3, then 1/4, just to see if the intake is messing with you. Check it out, hope it helps.

When I try to crank my bike the engine turns over, will not start

The bike needs 3 things to run, fuel, compression and spark correctly timed. Try taking one plug out and connect it to the ignition lead. rest the plug against the engine and crank the bike - You should see a fat blue spark. If you have a spark, stick your finger down the plug hole where you removed the plug and crank again, there should be enough compression to blast you finger out. If you have all these, check the fuel filter

Overheating

If you did indeed overheat the engine to the point that is stuck, you would probably know it by the antifreeze being poured all over the ground. The bike would be really hot just sitting on it. It would smell like antifreeze and just smell hot.. I know, smell hot? but an engine that has been ran to hot has a pretty distinctive hot smell... It doesnt sound like an overheating situation if none of the above happened. A bike that is overheating will begin to loose power before it stops. LIke lacuna said, everything inside of the engine will start to expand from the heat and the piston will stick in the cylinder. Most of the time when this happens, the bike will cool off and restart. But, usually with problems. Warped or cracked head, cracked block, broken piston rings. These engines are aluminum and dont like to be overheated and warp really easy. If the engine is really hot, it will not turn over until it cools down enough. Im not saying it couldnt have overheated and then restarted without any problems, its happened before, but just not likely. But, if this is the case, take lacunas advice and change all of the fluids. Your oil will be nasty. Maybe get ahold of the previous owner and see if it has had any probems. It kinda sounds electrical to me. as long as the above overheating signs didnt happen. If you dont think it was overheating and it happens again, try to push start the bike to see if the engine turns over. even putting the bike in second or third gear just see if you can move the bike back and forth. If nothing else, you'll at least know its not locked up.

Try changing your temperature gauge (temperature switch). It's located right next to the thermostat (at least on my 1992 it is)

"The temperature switch supplies engine coolant temperature data to the MCU. Until the engine is sufficiently warmed (above 135°F/57°C), the system remains in the open loop mode of operation (i.e., a fixed air/fuel mixture based upon engine rpm)."
