Question about 2005 Yamaha Royal Star Venture

Trottle side exhaust of bike is hot but the left side exhaust is warm at best. Good air flow on both sides. The four cylinders and heads seem to be heated up the same amount. The motor is working fine, I have put 300 km on the bike. Is there a problem?

You are obviously not getting good combustion on that cylinder that is only warm. You are not running 100% on all 4. That WILL cause issues in the future because it upsets the balance. The bike is not firing evenly. Is this thing new?

When my bike is running I get white smoke from the right side exhaust and the right side also blows harder than the left. What could this be?


IF you are running stock pipes (not "True Duals"), the right pipe exhaust ALL from the front cylinder, and SOME of the rear, and the left pipe only blows SOME of the rear alone.

The stock rear pipe splits, some going to the left pipe by itself, and the rest going to the right pipe WITH the exhaust from the front cylinder.

Now, white smoke usually indicates moisture.
Being a (non-VRod) Harley, that eliminates the liquid coolant, because there is none.

Next up that comes to mind is condensation.
BUT, this would burn off fairly quickly.

So is the white smoke only at first, or even when warmed up?
And if warmed up, is it actually coming OUT of the pipes, or OFF the pipes (like some oil burning)?

On my pipes one side is hot and the other is cold


Check the pipe right where they come out of the heads. It depends on what type of exhaust system you have on your Road King. If the stock exhaust is on the bike, the rear cylinder exhaust is directed to both mufflers. With the exhaust from the front and part of the exhaust from the rear cylinders going to the right side muffler, it gets more exhaust than the left side and runs hotter. Like I said, check the temp of the exhaust pipes at the cylinder heads. If one of them is cold, that cylinder is not firing. As long as both of the pipes are hot there, you're fine. Just ride the bike and have fun.

1997 Honda CBR 1100 XX. Bike builds idle slowly when cold . right side exhaust is forceful and hot while left side exhaust in minimal and warm only. Changed plugs and made no difference. Seems to idle...


Clay, you have a tiger by the tail. There are a lot of little parts to the carb system. I will try to assist you in the basics without carb removal. This may require a few replies back and forth. Start by turning off the gas then drain the carbs. Now turn on the gas and check to see that fuel flows into each carb. If gas starts flowing out of all the float bowls, now that the gas is back on, then all carbs are getting gas. To drain the carbs just remove the drain screw on the bottom of each carb float bowl. Two carbs have the drain screw on the left, two have it on the right side. Reply with what you find. tombones49_51.gif

My 83 GL1100 goldwing will not idle i have good firing at all cylinders but sitting on the bike the 2 left side exhaust pipes have good heat out exhaust while the 2 right are just warm,are there adjustment...


first try cleaning the carbs, new spark plugs and adjust valve clearances, new oil and clean air filter, before any screw adjustments, which will need some vacumn gauges attached to set the carb sync

This is the same for many years. I will send this in 2 post it is to long. Hope this helps you. From the '00 Rodeo workshop manual:

Cylinder Head Assembly
Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect connector of intake air temperature
sensor from intake air duct.
3. Remove PCV hose from air intake duct.
4. Remove nut from air intake duct bracket and loosen
hose clamp on throttle body. Remove air intake duct
assembly with air cleaner cover.
5. Remove intake air duct bracket from cylinder head.
6. Drain engine coolant.
7. Move drive belt tensioner to loose side using wrench
then remove drive belt.

8. Remove radiator upper hose from engine side.
9. Remove four nuts of exhaust front pipe.
10. Remove three bolts from generator bracket then
remove the generator with brackets.

11. Disconnect crankshaft angle sensor connector.
12. Disconnect knock sensor connector.
13. Remove heater hose from adapter side.
14. Remove heater hose from water pipe side.
15. Remove water hose between water pipe and throttle

 Do not allow oil or other chemical substances to

the life.
 Do not attempt to pry or stretch the belt with a
screw driver or any other tool during installation.
 Store timing belt in cool and dark place. Never
expose the belt direct sunlight or heat.
31. Remove two idle pulleys, the left side with idle pulley
bracket.
32. Remove two bolts and stud bolt and remove timing
belt rear cover.
33. Remove camshaft angle sensor
34. Disconnect engine oil pressure switch connector.

Compressor is building up pressure very slow.


It could very well be the valve plate however before you order parts take a look at the cylinders. Unplug the unit, remove the cover from crank side and turn the compressor by hand till the/a piston is at top of stroke. Examine upper cylinder for scratches /wear or failed vinyl piston ring. On oil-free compressors, dirt and grit is sucked-in from the bottom of the cylinder and causes leaks between cylinder wall and piston. If scratched, air pressure is leaking down thru cylinder wall. Failed reed valves cause a pulsation at the intake port (air seems to be pumped out the intake). If you see a model number anywhere on the pump that begins with " WL", your pump is made by Campbell Hausfeld. Parts can be ordered from www.chpower.com. other-wise order parts from sears parts. Cylinder kits are around $40. Good Luck on the repair and email if you have questions.

Exhaust air stronger and warmer on side than the other.


check out any blockage in the fuel  pump as its getting proper pressure to get started.

Losing power when it gets hot


are you turning off the choke after its warmed up? bike will not run right if the choke is left on and will seem like its losing power. if its off, then read on.

pull the spark plug and take a look at it. does it look like light brown toast (as it should) at the end that goes into the cylinder or does it look like it is brand new (still white)? if it looks brand new, then its indicating a lean condition and will run very hot (you may see evidence [blueing] on the exhaust pipe where it exits the cylinder head) and stop running. hopefully damage was not done to the piston (usually a lean condition will put a hole in the top of the piston). if its a lean condition, then read on.

so what's causing the lean condition? have you recently added a high flow air cleaner or after market exhaust pipes without rejetting the carb? or maybe you had to rebuild the carb, bought a kit from a dealer and the size of the jets were not correct? if you can return things to the "before" condition one at a time, then you can determine what change caused the problem.
