How do i rewire a ignition system on a 1975 Harley Sportster ? I'm not getting any spark. I have the Clymer but it doesn't specifically have a schematic for the 1975 for the wiring section.

If you go to the dealer, you may be able to get more detailed wiring specs. They used to keep alot of that on the micro fish machine. I got some for my '85 Suzuki that way. I am sure they may charge you for them. Also, to my memory I think those bikes ran through 1986 with the same wiring set up. Therefore you can go to a harley dealer and purchase a "shop manual" The Clymer, haines ect manuals sucks when it comes to wiring and other systems. If you want complete details a SHOP MANUAL is the only way to go. They are not cheap either. I paid $86.00 for my Suzuki manual which came as a stck of loose copied paper! But it was all I could get and had to have it. Harley may be worse in price. I have a '99 sportster now and they only manual I am getting for it will be the Harley Davidson shop manual. Who knows how much that will cost me. Its Either that you get the facroty serviuce manual or you are gonna have to chase wires with a test light. Been there, done that. Could be worse. Be thankful you are not dealing with a whole car with computers and fuel injection, emmisions, security ect!

1975 Sportster died at red light

Hi, Frank and the usual suspects are:
1. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a preliminary reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
2. Failed alternator/generator and or voltage regulator.
3. Loose or corroded battery terminals and or cables especially the "NEGATIVE" cable, look for loose, corroded, or broken connectors inside the cable harness at "BOTH" ends.
4. Failed main circuit breaker or ignition switch, check for loose connections and continuity.
5. Failed system and or ignition relay, check for continuity.
6. Failed ignition coil, stator, magneto, ignition/electronic module.
7. Failed CKP, CPS, CMP, MAP, TPS, or BAS sensor, corroded, loose or broken wire connector pins/sockets.
8. Throttle cables and or idle speed improperly adjusted hot idle speed should be 950 RPM to 1000 RPM.
9. Faulty neutral, side stand or clutch lever safety switch.
10. Air/fuel mixture screw improperly adjusted.
11. Accelerator pump damaged or not working.
12. Water or dirt in the fuel system, carburetor or filter.
13. Restricted, blocked or kinked fuel line.
14. Fuel tank empty.
15. The gas cap is not venting properly or fuel tank venting system blocked.
16. A failed fuel pump, pressure regulator and or fuel injectors.
17. Vacuum line from intake manifold to petcock broken, cracked, or not attached, carburetor vent line plugged.
18. Needle and seat stuck closed in the float bowl.
19. Lean angle switch is faulty or needs adjustment.

I have a 1975 Harley SX 250 with a very intermittent spark.

If your points are sparking as it is running, replace your condenser. I would do that first anyway. You can put any condenser in it., A condenser is a condenser. Make sure your new plugs, points and condenser are all operating correctly. You have probably already done all that but it is all I can think of.

2003 harley 1200 sportster won't start when warm tuns over no spark just changed coil no difference starts right away when cold

Hi Curtis, the CKP sensor needs compression to send correct signal to the ICM/ECM, make sure both spark plugs are in heads and use a grounded third plug to check for spark or hold spark plug cable close to spark plug in head. If still not getting spark the usual suspects are:
1. Fouled spark plugs.
2. Battery voltage below 8.7 volts, loose or broken battery cables especially ground cable to frame.
3. Loose connection at ignition coil or plug between ignition sensor and module.
4. Spark plug cables in bad condition, shorting / leaking, spark plug cable connections loose.
5. Faulty ignition coil or ignition / electronic module
6. Failed CKP, CMP, MAP or BAS sensor.
7. Faulty ignition switch.
8. Security alarm failing to disarm.
