Question about 1983 Suzuki Gs 550 L

My bike won't start, perhaps a dead battery?

So my 1983 Suzuki GS550L just died a few hours ago. It was very hot, and the engine cut when I was trying to go forward from a stop, I think maybe I let go of the clutch too fast. But It starts up again when I've done that in the past. It didn't this time. At first it muttered once when I put the choke on full blast, but it now just clicks, nothing. I'm not sure what's wrong with it, and hope it starts again, please help! This has happened before, though those times the bike wasn't that hot.

Check to see if you still are getting spark. check the voltage of the batt. with a multi meter and see if you have power. does your headlight stay bright or is it now dim. tell tale signs of the batt. life.

SOURCE: does the 1983 suzuki gs550L have an oil filter

Yes , there is a cartridge style oil filter under a round cover in the front of the machine. There are three dome nuts with sealing washers that hold the cover on. The spring goes against the front cover to push the filter into the motor. Be sure to replace the o-ring on the cover so you do not create new leaks.

Suzuki gs550L will not start in hot humid weather.

Hi, Dan some bikes get "Sun Stroke" after running fine in the morning then shut off and parked in the sun for a couple of hours on a hot day. You get back on the bike hit the starter button and nothing happens or the engine turns over but will not fire. Then you put the bike in the shade for 20-30 minutes and it fires up no problem.
The primary reason for this phenomenon is faulty wire connections in the Starter and/or Ignition Circuit. You may have a wire connection/component that makes just enough contact when cool to start and run the bike, but when parked and exposed to direct sunlight heat causes expansion and creates an "OPEN" in the circuit not allowing the bike to start. You move the bike into the shade for a few minutes, the temperature goes down allowing the connection to contract and make better contact and suddenly "it's a miracle" the bike starts. I know what you're thinking that Gremlin could be anywhere, and you would be right in that assumption, you can take your bike to a dealer, spend tons of "DRACHMA" only to receive validated nervous emotions the next time you park in the sun, then 1 week later it doesn't start. Start by doing a ground check:
Check the battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary. Check all common grounds for the same suspects.
The secondary reason your bike may get "Sun Stroke" is vapor lock although this is a rare scenario it does happen.

My 83' Suzuki GS550L is having power issues. It isn't charging, the regulator keeps overheating and burning up, the stator isn't putting out enough juice and I am left with a dead bike on the side of

You have replaced the battery, the rect/reg twice and the stator twice. Wiring is thought to be OK the only part not checked is the magnetic rotor. These rarely go wrong, to see if it is showing a strong magnetic force try putting a screwdriver blade near it.

Some bikes used to have brushes in the alternator similar to a car set up these can cause problems if worn or loose. If yours is a 2 part (air gap) alternator having just the rotor and stator try this. Unplug the alternator connector that links to the reg/rect. Get a multimeter and set to continuity ohms find a good earth point on the bike and connect the black meter lead to it touch the red lead to each contact in the alternator connector in turn if you get no reading or buzz from the meter the stator is OK. I would then look at the battery. Make sure the battery is able to be charged, do not use a car charger ever, you need a charger that is for motorcycle use only, less than 1 amp output. Never try to jump start the bike from another vehicle, when removing the battery disconnect negative first when fitting the battery connect positive first. Good luck.

More likely to be your ignition coils. They heat up and expand this can cause an open circuit which will close up again when it has cooled down. Although, a bad charging system may cause this problem. Check the battery voltage with engine switched off ( approx 12 volts) and with the engine running (approx 14 volts) If you are getting 14 volts then your battery is dead, if you aren't, then your charging system has a fault.

1982 Suzuki Gs 550 L will not start when hot

Hi, Zach and the usual suspects are:
1. Fuel tank empty.
2. The fuel tank has old dead gas.
3. Fuel tank bottom contaminated with ethanol sludge, dirt, water, rust, etc.
4. Fuel supply valve/petcock turned off.
5. Fouled spark plugs.
6. Engine flooded as a result of overuse of the enrichner.
7. Vacuum hose to the fuel supply valve/petcock disconnected, broken, cracked, or pinched.
8. Fuel valve/petcock or filter clogged.
9. Fuel line to carburetor or throttle body pinched, kinked or blocked.
10. Carburetor float stuck.
11. Fuel injectors clogged.
12. Fuel injectors stuck open.
13. Severely discharged or a damaged battery should have 12.5 volts or more and be able to pass a proper "LOAD" test if necessary, you may have a cursory reading of 12.5 volts or more but little or zero amperage the battery is faulty and must be replaced, AGM batteries fail in this scenario more so than lead acid batteries.
14. Check battery terminals for damage or corrosion, check the battery cables at "BOTH" ends for loose, corroded, or broken connectors, "INSIDE" and outside the cable harness, perform connector wiggle test and check cables with an ohmmeter if necessary.
15. Loose or corroded wire connection at the coil or plug between ignition sensor and ECM module.
16. Spark plug cables in bad condition and shorting check for spark leakage in the dark, cable connections loose, or connected to the wrong cylinders.
17. Ignition timing incorrect due to a faulty ignition coil, ignition module or MAP, CMP, CKP, O2, TPS, ETP, IAC sensors.
18. Faulty neutral, clutch lever, or kickstand safety switch.
19. Faulty fuel pump or fuse or relay.
20. A stuck bent or burnt valve.
21. Tilt sensor needs a reset.
22. Security system not disarming alarm needs a reset.
23. Check for engine trouble codes.

sounds like a charging system. same thing happens with cars when the alternator goes kaput. so i would say check your charging system weather it be an alternator or generator.
