Is a 2009 royal star 1300 engine really just a detuned v max engine if so what are the differences?

Vmax is the strongest motor (most HP) , then comes the old style Venture (strong and dependable), then new style Royal Star (most restricted and self destructive). The motors have been so greatly detuned that they have lost some reliability. The carburetors are different, the cams (cam lobe/position) timing is different, the exhaust is restricted, I believe the CDI timing has been changed, and the counter balancer shaft in the main block of the motor has been removed causing more wear ,tear, and vibration in the motor. The spot in the motor is still in the motor for the counter balancer shaft in front of the crank shaft so it can be put in . there may be other changes but these are probably the most critical. It is not cost effective to upgrade a Royal Star unless you have a donor Vmax. I would never recommend the Royal Star for those reasons. I warned a friend off of the bike, he purchased one from a dealer, and with in a week of the purchase of the used unit the motor disintegrated. The only luck he had was that it happened just before the very end of the warranty. Yamaha replaced the entire motor , it would have cost too much to rebuild it. I worked a a Yamaha dealership for 25 years watching the complete evolution of the models with the V-four motor and to this day can not under stand why Yamaha did such a great disservice to the engine and the customers.

No problem would like more power. told too put on vmax carbs and intakes. what do u think? have all ready changed the cams and springs.

Ideally you could have taken the engine out of Vmax. Then you would have the high performance cams, carbs, and the ever important counter balancer shaft (in the Vmax and the original Venture, but not in the Royal Star even though it is machined for it.) The only other thing you need is a more free flowing exhaust. As for the carbs you may be able to just put in a performance jet kit.

Hi 2000 yamaha Vmax, 4600 miles on the clock.

This sounds like a carburetor problem. Either bad gas, partially plugged pilot jets, carb diaphragm cracked or has a pin hole, carbs out of sync or diaphragm cap is not tight. It would be best to have a dealer check it out. However, before going to the dealer I would try one thing. Drain the float bowls on all four carbs. There is a drain plug on the bottom of each bowl. Condensation inside the gas tank can make it's way into the carb. Bikes don't run well with water in the gas. Please rate my solution. Thanks.

Can you comment on how to increase horsepower on a 1998 1300 Tour Cruiser, at a reasonable cost.

This is a question asked about a decade too late, unfortunately. The 1996-1998 Standards, Tour Classics, and Tour Deluxes benefited greatly from Yamahas' decision NOT to offer the VMax in Europe and Asia with V-Boost - leaving non-US customers some 50+ horsepower down. The VMax had the look BUT they were being blown away by any literbike on the market, and, worse yet, couldn't compete with the Honda V65 Magna, a bike similarly styled and engineered, introduced four years earlier, and thoroughly "shaken out".

Aftermarket to the rescue! Big Air kits, cams, titanium lifter buckets, four-into-four low restriction exhausts, high-capacity water, oil and fuel pumps, tunable ignition systems, oversize front and rear shocks and springs - the best part for Royal Star riders was that many of the accessories were available for their bikes, because of the similarities between the 1200cc VMax and 1300cc Royal Star engines and suspensions.

Now, however, the older VMaxes are historic footnotes, and the Royal Stars haven't received anything but cosmetic upgrades since 1999. The market for Royal Star performance parts in the U.S. is mostly nonexistent; the bikes are usually bought for touring or cruising duties, not stoplight-to-stoplight bashes; reliability, comfort and appearance are the Royal Star's strengths.

I owned a 1998 Tour Deluxe, and searched the Internet for the parts I had used to personalize it. The two survivors of the last decade seem to be: Baron Stealth Big Air Kit - $249.95 (http://www.baroncustom.com/), and Dynatek Dyna 3000 digital ignition $289.99 http://www.dynaonline.com/). Competition Cams dropped their cams, springs, and lifters, and both Bub and Cobra dropped their 4-into-4 and 4-into-2 exhausts. Some of the exhausts are still available for 99- Royal Stars, but that's no help for you.

How to take off a yamaha vmax 1200cc 1991 starter motor?? Whats the simplest way to do it??

The easiest way is to first drain all of the antifreeze. Use a clean container, because you can re-use it later if it is not too old. Then remove the radiator, and then remove the thermostat cover. (you will need to un-do all of the hoses to do this.) The the starter will be reasonably easy to get to. It took me about 45 minutes to do this on mine. As a side note. If it is starting slowly when hot, I found that if you dis-assemble the starter and take some sand paper (about 300 grit) to the brushes and the part of the stator that they rub on, it will solve the problem without buying a new starter. I hope this helps.

Need cam timing specs 22r toyota truck

there will be two highlighted or dotted chain links for the camshaft and one for the crankshaft gear, position cam dot/TDC indicator in the 12-O clock position, the two dotted links should be on ether side of cam dot, turn crank dot to the 6-O clock position and line up highlighted link with dot on crank gear, if timing cover is on, then make sure cylinder 1 is at TDC when the two links are at 12-O clock.
