Question about Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Electra Glide Ultra Classic Motorcycles

1 Answer

FLHTCU-I no start. When turning the key to on and pressing thumb switch to run I hear a click but do not hear the pump energize/run as it normally does. Is there a fuse that could be tested or relay?

Hi, John YaYa and Fratto are on the right track it all depends on the year of your bike from 1997-2001 the fuel pump relay was under the seat to the right of the battery all other years it was behind the right side panel also it should be noted that in order to "PROPERLY" diagnosis any electric starter issue it is "IMPERATIVE" that you begin with a fully charged battery 12.5 volts or better and be able to pass a proper load test, and the usual suspects are:
1. Battery terminals have loose or corroded connections.
2. Battery cables faulty due corroded or broken internal wiring at the cable connector especially the "NEGATIVE" cable which needs to be checked at "BOTH" ends.
3. Battery voltage, must be 12.5 volts or better, voltage from the battery to the main circuit breaker to the ignition switch to the security/ignition fuse to the TSM/TSSM module to the engine stop/run switch to the starter button to the starter relay to the green wire that connects to the starter solenoid can not drop more than 1/2 volt of battery voltage.
4. With a voltmeter connected to the battery, the ignition switch in the on position, the kill switch in the run position, the starter button depressed, starter engagement should not bring voltage below 8-9 volts.
If a lower voltage is produced a proper battery load test should be performed with a load tester to validate battery integrity or battery replacement.
5. Faulty starter relay, check continuity.
6. Faulty starter solenoid, check contact plate and shoes for excessive electrical erosion/etching, refurbish as necessary or invert contact plate and use the virgin backside. Check contact shoes for being loose. Replace solenoid if the negative function is still a final outcome.
7. Faulty starter, bench test starter with a 12-volt battery if negative function check, decontaminate and undercut armature commutator segments as necessary, check segments with an ohmmeter probe each one and the segment next to it for shorts. Have the armature tested with a growler and field coils, and brush plate with an ohm-meter for opens, shorts or grounds. Replace brushes if less than .438" It is generally cheaper to overhaul/refurbish a starter motor than buy a new one.

Hi, John fuel injectors fail either electronically due to faulty connection/internal electronic failure or mechanical malfunction pintle stuck due to dirt, grime, and or ethanol sludge. Since some injectors can run $100 or so it's best to try and resolve the electrical or mechanical issue if possible. The first thing you need to do is check the fuses or the fuel injection system relay for continuity then the injector connection with a test light by turning the ignition switch off and on if there is no continuity backtrack to the ignition switch until you find the bad connection, if ok remove the injector and check it with jumper leads off your battery for function by touching then removing one of the leads if the injector is functioning properly you will hear and feel the click. If there is no click the pintle could be stuck in the open position due to contamination. If you are on a budget I "HIGHLY" recommend the services of InjectorRx above any DIY method, they can repair your injector to optimum performance for only $18 and if it is not repairable there is no charge. There are DIY methods on youtube but there is no guarantee they will work or last any amount of time. Here is what Injector Rx can do for you
    1. The injectors are checked for resistance. If they fail the ohm test we will notify you that your injectors has failed and should be replaced.
    2. The injectors are then checked for external cracks and or damage.
    3. The injector is now externally cleaned and prepare for the flow test bench.
    4. The Fuel injectors are flow tested and the results are recorded.
    5. O-rings and filter baskets are removed if possible.
    6. The fuel injectors are now placed in an ultrasonic cleaning bath where they are pulsed open and closed for 30 – 40 minutes.
    7. The injectors are removed from the ultrasonic cleaning bath and then back flushed to remove any additional grime or dirt.
    8. New O-rings and filter baskets are installed (if and when available).
    9. The fuel injectors are now tested for spray pattern and atomization.
    10. The injectors are once again flow tested, The results are recorded and compared to see if the injector flows properly.
    11. If the injectors fail a second cleaning session will be attempted.
    12. Once cleanings are finalized the fuel injectors are lubricated and placed in a sealed bag.
    13. A flow sheet is prepared and shipped with the injector.
Since they do not sell fuel injectors you can be assured that they will do everything possible to get your motorcycles fuel injector to perform as they should. If they don’t succeed they will not charge you for their time.
If you prefer the DIY method then I recommend the jumper wires to open the injector and carburetor cleaner with the straw nozzle inserted in the pressurized end give it a good soaking with 3-4 healthy squirts, then blow dry with compressed air, repeat this procedure as necessary depending on the severity of contamination. For future protection, I would recommend pouring in a bottle of STP or Chevron with Techron Fuel System Cleaner in your fuel tank and every 4,000 miles thereafter.

Were can I find the fuel pump kill switch

When you first turn the key to start the vehicle the PCM - engine computer energizes the fuel pump relay turning on the fuel pump for two seconds to prim the system . The fuel pump won't be turned on again till the PCM receives a crankshaft position sensor signal. If you hear it come on the inertia fuel cut off switch is OK . Now then what problem are you having Lisa ? A no start condition ? Is there spark getting to the spark plugs ? Do you have a red light on the dash flashing when trying to start the truck ? Anti-theft system problem .

Tip

Normal crank no start

If your car will not start, do the following
1.) when you turn the key to the on position, note whether you can hear the fuel pump energize. You should hear the pump run for 3-5 seconds
2.) when you crank the engine, does it sound normal, or is it faster or slower than normal and is it EVEN
3.) Is the check engine light on while cranking
4.) finally, if possible, do you have SPARK at any/all spark plugs

All this should take just a few minutes and will help 10 fold during the diagnoses process

Won't do anything when I press the starter thumb switch on the throttle. Replaced the ignition key switch, new battery, but nothing starts. Starter turns when I take a screwdriver and contact the two...

Check your starter button it may be dirty. You can spray it with electrical contact cleaner or WD-40 and work it to clean up the contacts. David Mazon

My 2002 yukon cranks but does not start on 1st trun of key but will on 2nd?

Turn the key on and listen for the fuel pump to run for about 2 seconds. If you don't hear it run the may be a problem with the fuel pump relay or its cicuit. The extra cranking from the first and second try builds up oil pressure and that will energize the pump through the oil pressure switch.

If the pump runs for the two seconds try to start it on the first key turn. If it still does not start there may be a pressure or deleivery issue. So many vehicles no longer have external servicable fuel filters, yours may not. If it does though you may want to change it.

Also, does a security light come one and saty on in the dash?

YARD MAN 42 '' RIDEING MOWER WON'T START PROBABLY SAFETY PROBLEM

safety switches that all riding mowers seem to have include a seat/brake safety which means that you have to be sitting in the seat or the brake must be engaged for it to start. also there is the blade engaged safety, which means the mower will not start normally with the blades engaged.
if you meet those conditions check the switches themselves
non safety related, do you hear a click or a clunk when you turn the key to the start position, this is the starting coil pulling in to send power from the battery to the engine starter, all safety switches will interupt power from the key switch to the starting coil
if you hear the coil energize and the engine does not start you have low battery voltage or loose connection or some other mechanical problem

Cranks but wont start ,sputters but wont start has fuel in tank, it is a 1999 cougar V-6

Hi!!It sounds like your fuel pump is not working. Check fuel pump relay on engine compartment fuse box have somebody to turn the ignition key to the RUN position, DO NOT CRANK ENGINE (feel if the relay clicks when the key is turned, it will only be energized for a couple of seconds and then you should feel when it gets de-energized. if relay is OK, remove the fuel tank gas cap and repeat the same key operation, listen to the fuel pump coming in, again this will be running only for a couple of seconds, try a few times until you are sure one way or the other. If fuel pump works, then replace fuel filter and try to start vehicle. If vehicle does not start. You need to check fuel pump pressure. borrow a tester form Autozone or similar auto parts store. The fuel pressure should be between 30-40 psi with key ON engine OFF. If pressure is off either way, replace fuel pump. Here is how to hook up the fuel pressure tester 1kbron_71.jpg
Good Luck! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

My 1999 Cherokee doesnt start

Take off your gas cap and have someone stand there with thier ear at the hole, (no smoking), turn the key to on just before start and they should hear the fuel pump humming. if they dont then try to start. if it doesnt start turn key off and at that instant the pump should be heard again. What i think is happening is your pump is only energizing when you turn the key to off instead of energizing when you turn key on. Its supposed to energize when turning your key on and off. This would explain your second start working and not your first. This can be caused by a bad fuel pump relay switch. Hope this helps. please rate me
