Popping on deceleration is a sign of a lean fuel mixture. Could be a pipe change and now you should rejet the carbs or remap the fuel injection, could be it was set lean at the factory to pass emissions. Could be an airbox modification (unlikely). Could be a Fuel Nanny or other gizmo improperly set or malfunctioning.

The next thing I would check is the timing. An air leak somewhere in your intake system can also cause a lean mixture.

It sounds like a fuel starvation problem since it's spitting back out of the carb. Check you fuel cap to see if the vent is working. Loosen the cap and ride and see if that makes any difference.

Also, if your bike is equipped with the original vacuum equipped petcock, there could be problem with this as well. I've seen them get holes in the diaphragm and I've seen cause a vacuum leak. Check the vacuum hose and diaphragm. You'll have to remove the petcock from the tank. Personally, I'd recommend that you change the petcock to a high quality manually operated petcock like a Pingel.

Good Luck

Engine back fires

It may still have some water in the tank/system or the spark plug is no good. With a full tank of fuel, add 200ml of methilated spirits. It breaks up any moisture and lets it burn away. Also, with the motor out of gear, run the bike at higher revs and close the choke fully on and give full throttle at the same time. When the motor starts to die, flick the choke off. This can sometimes unclog a carby jet that may be slightly blocked because with the air choked,it gives a sudden **** off fuel. This may/maynot fix the bike but it the 1st thing to try before paying a dealer and it can't hurt anything.Hope this helps you

That throttle cable issue sounds like it may be the culprit. the cable housing (the outer casing for the wire throttle cable) may not be anchored correctly. Which may be allowing you to move the throttle without any change at the butterfly control on the carb. make sure the cable housing is anchored at both ends.. by the throttle control and at the carb area.. That may be your problem... hope it is that simple...

ENGINE NOT FIRING

Ask your mechanic about cleaning the "throttle wadding". I had the same problem as you. Sometimes, the wadding in the throttle cable gets real gritty and grimy and doesnt allow the throttle cable to adjust properly. Once it was clean, everything was back to normal. My mechanic did it for free since it took about no time.
