If your looking at the dash, Most gauges don't move till the engine is running. If your looking at a scanner and no RPM's. Most likely it is the crank sensor. Could be the wiring/plug. Worse case is the PCM died.
Diagnose the no spark first. Check to make sure the crankshaft position sensor is not damaged and is plugged in. Check to make sure the camshaft sensor is also plugged in . Does the car have a RPM gauge? If so, check to see if the needle moves while cranking the engine, this would indicate the crank signal is good. Also, check to make sure the ground wires got attached under the ignition module bracket. The short burst of fuel is not uncommon on an engine that is not running.
Since you didn't say what engine you have, I am assuming it to be a 3.7 L. Code P2305 is set for insufficient ionization of the #2 coil.
1. Inspect the spark plugs for correct application, these should have NGK platinum spark plugs installed. Inspect the plugs for any signs of misfiring, such as carbon tracking on the spark plug insulator or the coil boot. Inspect for cracked spark plugs or incorrect gap. Inspect for any kind of fouling on the spark plugs. Replace the spark plugs or the coils as needed.
2. Verify the wiring is not shorted to ground from the coils to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
3. Keep in mind that anything that can affect the air fuel mixture can cause this code to set. Be SURE that there are NO vacuum leaks, the injector is not at fault, etc. Moving parts one at a time (spark plug; coil; injector) to "known good" cylinders is the best way to diagnose this trouble code.
Ford coil on plug systems are multi strike ignition (spark) under 1300 rpm then go to single strike a single cylinder misfire can be created by several things . #1 Test engine compression on a cranking engine compression it should be around 150 lbs but if gauge reads different COMPARE to other cylinders that work fine #2 check engine running compression this will be around 120 lbs then rev over 2000 rpm and check pressure drop again COMPARE to other cylinders that work fine. any drop would indicate valve train problems. #3 All internal engine is fine then external problems are present vacuum leaks and or fuel injection volume is low.
There has to be a reasonable spark at hand cranking speed, with most electronic ignitions they work off speed of rotation so you do need to crank the engine at a fair speed, check the air gap between the flywheel magnet and the ignition core, this should be around 0.3mm, if there is not spark at all when cranked well it will be a replacement unit required.
Has the service engine light come on? If so, have the codes pulled and it will narrow down the cylinder that is causing the problem. If no service engine light, have you narrowed it down to one cylinder or is it random. Let me know and we will go from there. Regards,
How to Test Engine CompressionAn engine depends on an equal compression reading in each cylinder to run smoothly. If poor compression exits in one or more cylinders it can cause a rough idle condition and low power. A compression test can be performed to check wear or internal damage. To start a engine compression test gauge is needed. There are two types of gauge styles, one threads into the spark plug hole which is more accurate. The other style of gauge is constructed with a rubber plug that is meant to be pressed against the spark plug hole, this style of gauge is difficult to use. To perform a engine cylinder compression test follow the steps below.
Remove ignition coil connector or ignition system fuse to disable power to the ignition system
Test ignition system to ensure that the power to the system has been disabled
Remove #1 cylinder spark plug and insert compression gauge, most gauges have a hose attachment that is installed into the spark plug hole with the gauge connecting to the gauge hose.
Engine Cylinder Compression Gauge
After the compression gauge has been inserted, use the starter to crank the engine over for about five seconds. Use about the same five seconds to test the remaining cylinders.
Record the compression reading as each cylinder is tested
Remove the compression gauge and reinsert the spark plug
Follow this procedure until all cylinders have been tested
Compare cylinders compression reading, all readings should be within about 5% of each other
If low compression exists a cylinder malfunction exits and further inspection is required. Possible causes for a low compression condition are: burned intake or exhaust valve, broken piston or piston ring, broken valve spring or a blown head gasket.
