Hi, Anonymous you have 2 options either do it yourself or take it to a professional radiator shop. There are many home remedies out there on the internet and Youtube some are ok while others are a waste of time, you only want to do this once and have a finished product that will last forever. In my 50 years of working on bikes I have cleaned many tanks, I have come up with a procedure that requires the minimum amount of time and money but produces optimum results, obviously, the severity of the contamination will dictate the necessary time it will take to achieve the desired end results of forever and no leaks and the best insurance policy is "PREP!!!PREP!!!PREP!!!PREP!!!PREP" and now for the kit, I recommend "POR-15" or "Red-Kote" stay away from any "Kreem" products as I have had issues with peeling in the past and you can get them from Amazon or eBay now for the fun part:
1. Drain and remove the gas tank.
2. Remove the cap-petcock-hoses and plug or tape the openings (not cap)
3. Insert water hose a let run for 3 minutes to remove loose primer flakes
4. Drain 1/2 of the tank replace gas cap shake like a martini for 30 seconds and pour out the remaining water and let air dry.
5. Pour in 1 cup of nuts-bolts-washers-ball bearings etc. and shake like a martini for 1 minute then empty contents, repeat the process until all contamination is removed, flush with water and use compressed air to remove water residue and vapor to minimize a micro-thin layer of surface rust that will start to form almost immediately so it's a good idea to start the installation of the sealing kit asap.
6. Follow kit directions precisely as indicated and you will end up with a finished project that you can be confident in and proud of.

I bought my Shine 1 month before. From the time I bought, I am facing a problem with the bike. Every day I have to use the choke for 5 minutes for the bike to start and run. If I remove the choking just...

1. Sounds like maybe fuel line from gas tank is clogging. Clean gas tank. To check, remove some gas from tank and run it through a paint screen.
2. Replace gas filter regardless.
3. Could also just be water in gas tank. Drain some gas from lowest point of tank (usually the reserve), into glass jar. Water should settle to bottom.

Need a gas tank for my 1993 honda shadow 600. Just got my motorcycle lic. and got this bike that had been sitting for 4 years. Is there a way to clean the tank or where can I buy one. really having...

What is wrong with the tank?? Rust? If not, the same gunk in the tank is in the carbs, They need to be cleaned too. If it is rust, you can clean and seal the tank like new again, with a little elbow grease and a product called POR, (paint over rust), It works great. leaves the tank looking like brand new inside, if it is gummed up from sitting, you will need to soak everything in carb cleaner, and scrub and clean and scrub and rub and wipe and pick out gunk till it is squeaky clean. Then maybe it will run. The jets in the carbs are super sensitive, the slightest spec of dirt or the tiniest clog, it will not run right. Check it out, hope this helps.

I've just bought a 2001 Bonneville (not America) and it has flaking / melted paint around the filler cap. The bike is intermittenly missing a beat and has cut out a couple of times at low revs. Seems...

A good plan, but if the bike is already missing now and again, I would be tempted to strip and clean the carbs.
It would be worth cleaning the tank out as well.

Turns over but won't start - spits only on full chook

Since it's on '01, if you've never cleaned the fuel filter, start there. Remove the tank, turn it over and remove the 2 bolts holding on the fuel tap. There is a small bag like filter in there. Remember how you take it apart. There are 2 rubber gaskets (reusuable) that have to go back correctly. The '01's have a problem with a bad gas tank lining and you will find chips of paint in the filter.

I have a 2004 Yamaha 650 V-Star Vin# JYAVM01N24A006902 It is 2-tone blue. The gas tank has a chip in the light blue. I need paint code for light blue. My paint system is NEXA 2K if that helps.

Hi, Eric982 for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. I have a 2007 zx10 r green with a small rock chip in the front of the petrol tank ??paint touch up pens or small pot?? mike

How much work as opposed to riding do you want to do?
Pens are not the best choice but when you consider the time and money involved with prepping and painting for an invisible repair then they look much better. If you use a pen there are a couple things you can do to improve the end results. First, wet sand the chipped area. The idea is to smooth the edges of the chip. Second, Clean it then before you use any paint, build up a couple layers of primer. Primer is better at filling and will not shrink as much. Finally make sure that the area is as clean as possible. Then apply your paint. Don't be afraid to go higher then the surrounding paint. You will wet sand it again. Now depending on what kind of paint it is you will either touch it up with some clear or buff it out.
Make sure you allow plenty of time between coats for drying.
Good Luck.

Need to clean gas tank

Water promotes rust. Go to the paint store and get some varnish remover. Put a gallon in the tank and follow manufacturers directions.Don't get any remover on the outside of the tank!

Considering the age of the bike I would get a liquid tank liner.

Google kreem fuel tank liner “ or go to www.

Paint protection

It sounds as if you are willing to do the right thing and get it coated or painted, right? What you need is not necessarily a clearcoat, but a better paint. Unless you use urethane paint, like they use on today's bikes, gas will dull or melt your tank paint. I'm not saying you can soak the think in gas, but you can spill fuel all over it, and just wipe it off without damage. Needs to be the top quality, urethane based auto paint. Costs more than the old DuPont Imron, but it's well worth it, looks great, and is gas-proof with or without the accompanying clear layer. I have restored many old bikes, and finally found out the hard way, not to scrimp on the tank paint! Good Luck. TT
