John Deere LT 155, why are small amounts of oil dripping into the carburetor air intake thru he oil breather hose connected to that air intake chamber

could be a valve issue or timing issue. flywheel key may be sheered a little bit causing incorrect firing.

It sounds like a coolant hose for the carb base plate or the intake.

I'm assuming the motor will crank over, but not start. Remove the air intake cover & filter off the carburetor air intake. Do you smell gas? Is gas dripping out of the carburetor? If not, spray a couple shots of starting fluid or carburetor cleaner into the carburetor air intake throat. Close the choke & crank the engine. If it starts, & stalls, repeat the process. If it won't stay running, your carburetor float jet is gummed up & needs to be cleaned. Check & clean the spark plug. Does the spark plug fire when the engine is cranked? If no, then you have an ignition problem.

It's going to need a carb kit to fix the problem. Make sure your gas cap is venting ok, because gas expands in the summer and can force gas to pass thru carburetor and flood the cylinder then passing down into the oil. Depending on the age of your mower, the carburetor may have a gas shutoff solenoid on the bottom and this may have malfunctioned. Another is a bad float or needle valve which a carburetor kit would fix. A needle kit with bowl gasket may be all it will need. Hope this will help.

It's possible that you may have either a clogged breather box or broken breather box hose. The breather box is located under the intake manifold. It is sometimes also called an oil trap.

Try loosening the gas cap a little...... there is a normally a small breather hole in the top or underside just above the seal which allows a small amount of air to enter into the fuel tank. Sometimes this breather hole gets clogged..... stopping air from entering into the fuel tank as fuel is used. Eventualy enough vacume pressure accumulates inside he tank causing a vapor lock. If you loosen your fuel cap slightly.... this should prevent the problem your experiencing. If it does... try soaking cap in deisel fuel or heating oil overnight, remove and allow to dry prior to re-installing. If the problem persists after a good soak, only option is to replace fuel cap. Has the oil been changed lately? A lot of times over filling the oil will cause oil to blow back thru the carburetor, Also if the air filter got caked with mud running the box with no lid or allot of dirt in the filter. The engine will try to use the crankcase breather hose as an air intake since not enough air was coming in the conventional way, therefore sucking in oil. Has it smoked at all? Sometimes if you try to shut it off oil will run back down the intake tubes into the air box. This may be applicable to your engine that the breather is being used to **** oil into the box due to lack of fresh air intake.
The other possibilities would be crank case pressure pushing the oil in (piston ring blow by), but that should (theoretically) result in low compression (since the cylinder pressure is getting to the crankcase instead of staying in the cylinder), the oil is overfull and being pushed out since air will compress but liquid will not, or poor crank case ventilation system design (but if that were the case likely there would be a recall as that would directly effect emissions which is federally regulated).

It is located between the Intake Manifold on the engine and the Air Breather, which is under the seat. To remove, turn the fuel shutoff valve to OFF. Remove the fuel supply hose from the carb; it may help to leave it in place on the shutoff valve. Loosen the hose clamps that connect the carb to the Air Breather and the Intake Manifold. On the right side of the bike, you will have to remove the cover and cables for the throttle control. The cover should be held on by two small screws. The cables will come out of their grooves, but you may have to work at that a bit.
