Hi, George 2 & 3 do not apply and the usual suspects are:
1. Clutch controls improperly adjusted.
2. Oil level too high in primary chaincase.
3. Primary chain badly misaligned.
4. Clutch discs warped.
5. Insufficient clutch spring tension.

It is difficult to get my bike to go into neutral if I am standing still .. if it is going it will shift into neutral.....

the clutch is dragging then,i bet it also goes into neutral when the engine isnt running easily ? if it has a hydraulic clutch bleed it if its a cable clutch adjust it so there is 2 mm free play at the lever and if its still dragging it coukd either be a grooved clutch basket or warped clutch metal plates.

My 1990 VMax 1200 is overheating even with the fan on

Hi, Anonymous and the usual suspects are:
1. Engine oil level and SAE weight are too low or not circulating.
2. Insufficient or blocked air flow over the engine.
3. Heavy combustion chamber carbon deposits.
4. Ignition timing retarded due to faulty MAP, CKP, or CMP sensor.
5. Carburetor jetted too lean.
6. Leaking intake or exhaust valve.
7. Water coolant old or low change every two years.
8. Water pump failure.
9. Radiator clogged, cap loose or malfunctioning.
10. Radiator fans not coming on.
11. Clutch slipping, brakes dragging, heavy load, towing a trailer etc.
12. Idling too long without moving.
13. For constant hot weather temperatures, mountain, or desert riding conditions consider adding an oil cooler and or cylinder head cooler.

How thick should the friction plates be on my 97 kx 125 be ?

There will be some drag with it in gear and the clutch disengaged. The big test.. does it try to creep along when idling in 1st? The wheel should be free enough to turn by hand sorta, but there should be resistance. Once the oil is warm the drag will decrease significantly. When adjusting the clutch be sure to have the proper free lever. If you have it too tight it's going to start slipping, and hose the plates. You should be able to slip a penny between the handle and the perch at the gap crossed by the cable, before the clutch starts to open (the lever moves on the motor)

Wat lube are you running in the case? some goopey slop will cause a significant drag. When the clutch is in you are still turning all the gears in the transmission, that is a load of drag!
Have you recently rebuilt clutch? Check for notches in the basket dragging on the plates.

Plates and liners out of order will really drag bad. Have you had the plates out of the basket?

When it's idling and you put it into gear, does it kill the engine?

Clutch rattle

no there is not a kit available. I have tried it myself before and used other spec material for the damper in the clutch and made the rivets myself. Worked great but is very timely. I'd actually recommend buying a new basket. The side pedals on the original basket often get grooves from the clutch plates wearing on them which can cause clutch chatter too.

Clutch

First I would check cable is free in its case and not fouled anywhere. Next check the actuating screw that converts pull to push motionis it greased nicely and smooth in operation? Is the clutch push rod straight? Are any ball brgs fitted on it? (some may not apply to sei). Now guess you should re check the basic adjustments of cable and actuator. (may be onc/case cover) Finally I would check the clutch spring free length agaunst specscheck the basket is tight on shaft, check the basket for wear grooves onthe tangs, if necc take a file to emm! must be smooth. Check no wear groovs or burs on centre hub where plates side. Are plates within wear specs? Not burnt / blued up?Have you the correct oil in engine? (too thick wil drag). You havnt put a friction modifier in it? Hope this helps although you prob tried it all!! good luck,,,,
