2001 1200 custom XL Sportster Sputters and stalls and now floods on restarts.


Hi Jerry, and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.
2. Spark plug cables in bad condition or leaking.
3. Spark plug gap to close or to wide.
4. Faulty ignition coil, module and or sensor.
5. Battery nearly discharged.
6. Damaged wire or loose connections at battery terminals especially the negative cable at "BOTH" ends, ignition coil, or plug between ignition sensor and module.
7. Intermittent short circuit due to damaged wire insulation.
8. Water or dirt in fuel system, carburetor or filter.
9. Fuel tank vent system plugged or carburetor vent line closed off.
10. Carburetor controls misadjusted.
11. Damaged carburetor or intake seals.
12. Loose or dirty ignition module connector at crankcase.
13. Faulty MAP, CKP, and or CMP sensors.
14. Incorrect valve timing.
15. Weak or broken valve springs.
16. Damage intake or exhaust valve.

I HAVE A 2002 HARLEY DAVIDSON HARRIAGE MOTORCYCLE AND IT IS BACK FIREING AND TRYING TO FLOOD OUT WHEN I RIDE IT. HOW DO I FIX IT?


Hi Steve, and the usual suspects are:
1. Spark plugs in bad condition or partially fouled.

86 harley oil leaks out carb when you start it


Your crankcase vents into the carb air filter. This was required by the EPA. All crankcase vented pressure has to be cycled through the engine. So, If you'll look behind your air filter to the rear of the bike, you should see a pipe coming from just behind the oil pump up to the backside of the air filter. The air pressure exhausted from the crankcase has an oil mist in it. There are baffles in the pipe but sometimes during servicing, these baffles get left out. Still, even with the baffles, there is some oil mist that makes it's way to the air filter. This oil builds up over time and causes a drip out of the air filter. Regular cleaning of the air filter assembly reduces this.

If you're getting more than the usual amount of oil, your engine could be "oil sumping". This is where the oil in the oil tank seeps past the check ball valve in the oil pump and builds up in the bottom end of the engine. When you start the engine, the oil pump cannot pump it back to the tank fast enough and it's blown out the crankcase vent tube right into your air filter. You can "reseat" the check ball and may be able to get it to stop doing this.

Or, you could remove the crankcase vent tube going up to the air filter. Put a piece of tubing about six inches long on the nipple coming out of the engine case and plug the hole in the backside of the air filter backing plate. Then, the oil will directed onto the ground instead of into your air filter.

1996 Harley Davidson Dyna super glide, oil blowing back through carburator.


In all probablility, the oil is not being blown back through your carb but rather is being blown into your carb. In 1994, Harley went to a crankcase breater system that we refer to as "head breathers". If you remove your outer air filter cover, you'll see two large bolts that screw into each head of your engine. These are "union" bolts in that they are hollow and allow excess crankcase pressue to be blown into the air filter for recirculation through the engine to be burned. The EPA started requiring this back in late 80's but the lower crankcase vent system that Harley used caused even more problems and was changed to this system.

I have oil in my dyna 88 air filter


This is not uncommon. The reason is that the EPA requires that the crankcase overpressure be routed so as to be run through the engine. Harley does this by venting crankcase pressure through the rocker boxes and into the air filter just like automobiles do with the PCV valve. The two large "bolts" that hold you air cleaner to the heads are hollow and vent the crankcase pressure into the air filter. This air has some oil mist in it and it builds up over time. You'll have to clean out the air filter from time to time. Or, there are several aftermarket kits available that will allow you to relocate the crankcase vent. Check with your dealer, either Harley or Independent.

Flooded car


first, not to panic. Unless you submerged your engine there is only a matter of some water getting on your ignition syste. Don't pull any plugs, won't help. Basicly its a dry out thing. The steam from your exhaust definately filled tthe engine compartment with plenty of moisture. Your car is new enough to where s little moisture will be overcome. If you stalled in water that deep, there is also the issue of having filled your exhaust system with water.. The car will not start with the exhaust blocked with water. It will be obvious if thats the case. It will blow water from tthe tail pipe. If it does start, any waterr will blow out and what doesn't will go away when everything heats up.

Oil come out the air cleaner


Too much crankcase pressure or the breather pipe is split/dosconnected. The crankcase breather goes into the rear of the air filter and the crankcase gasses are drawn in to the cylinder with the gas/air mixture and burned

Oil cap blasting off


Your crankcase is not breathing right. Re-Check your lines going into the air filter back plate, make sure the lines are not kinked in any way. Also make sure the lines are not dry rotted.
