Gl1500 and GL1800 have external alternators that can be easily changed. The GL1000, GL1100, and GL1200 you have to remove the motor completely or at least unbolt it and rotate it enough to get the rear cover off.

I have only experienced this phenomenon after reassembling a CX500. Unfortunately I had to take the rear cover off to fix it. There is a small spring that attaches to the gear changer mechanism that holds two opposed quarter gears in position. In my instance, when reassembling the gears became misaligned. You put it all back together, step it into first and the bike locks in first gear (disassembly required). I think in your case the spring has broken causing the same final result. It is possible that you have a bent shift fork, or other damage, unfortunately disassembly will be require to diagnose the problem. As I recall there are some removable inspection covers on the GL1000. A knowledgeable mechanic may be able to diagnose through the inspection covers.

How to change oil 1978 goldwing gl1000


Get 4 quarts of JASO MA certified motor oil. I recommend synthetic , it will shift better when hot. Amsoil is a good choice. Place an oil pan under the front of the motor. Use a 6 point socket to loosen the bolt on the round finned oil filter cover on the front right corner of the motor and spin it off.Take the oil filter out of the cover and make sure you save the washer that will stick to the rubber seal. Pull bolt out of cover and replace o-ring. put bolt back thru cover, first slide on spring,then washer,and then filter and spin back onto motor pressing filter against engine case. Snug bolt but do not over tighten. Now remove bolt in the middle of the front/bottom of motor(large one in middle , NOT small one under water pump). Check aluminum washer,if bad replace.After oil has drained put bolt back in , do not over tighten.Take off fill plug on right rear corner of motor(by final drive shaft) Using a funnel pour in 4 quarts oil (3.9 is correct amount, 1/10th quart does not seem to bother anything). Put plug back in , start up, and check for leaks.

I am trying to remove a starter from a 1978 Honda GL1000 Goldwing. The nut to the starter cable is corroded and stripped. What is the best way to remove the starter?


well at this point if you having a problem because the cable is connected i suggest you remove the starter and cable then work on getting the nut of on the work bench its only a small nut when you have it out on the work bench take a fine toothed hack saw and carefully cut almost through the nut then use a small chisel and small ball peen hammer to split it you dont want to damage the post if your going to rebuild it.

it will crank but dout you will get it to idle why don't you just by a new internal cable for it they ar e cheep?

I need to hookup headlight and turn/running lights for Honda GL1000 1978. My blue and yellow turn signal wires go very low voltage when activated. Why? Where can I find a good color wiring diag.?


are you getting battery voltageto the light?? if you are check the ground circuit.. ground wire to poss battery terminal get back if you have any questions

Check for lose connections at the main wires / fuse box, and the earth wire to the frame frm the engine.

I have a 1978 honda goldwing gl1000 motor when i turn on the fog lamp motor trys to die


Sounds like the charging circuit is breaking down causing a strain on the alternator and making the motor struggle.If it picks up on the throttle then this may be the case.
Check all the earth connections as these have a habbit of corroding and causing a high resistance.
