Brake fluid should be changed once a year (at least) check brake pads if their low the piston are all the way out and need to be changed or your master cyclinder seals are bad and need to be replaced

Everything except the brake lights work on my 2001 R1 Yamaha

Hi, Candace good for you any type of wiring harness installation is no small quickie and fixing the brake light is easy before diagnosing any brake light issue always check the bulb and fuse first for integrity a brake light staying on is usually caused by the front brake light switch, which is mechanical, not disengaging. On early models moving the throttle control housing closer to the front brake master cylinder is the main fix. On late models, the switch gets tweaked and needs to be realigned. A brake light that does not come on when the brake lever is applied can be caused by a faulty switch or no continuity in the wiring at the switch. The rear brake light switch is hydraulic and it is extremely rare to malfunction in a closed circuit condition causing the brake light to stay on. Usually, rear brake light switch issues are caused by no brake pedal free play or a sticky rear master cylinder piston. A brake light that does not come on when the rear brake pedal is depressed can be caused by a faulty switch, air contamination in the brake line, or no continuity in the wiring at the switch. When running.. even with front brake, and clutch in,putting it in gear makes the bike die?

The clutch plates are stuck inside the clutch basket. This is real common if the bike has been sitting up for awhile. Clean & disassemble the clutch assembly to fix this problem.

I have a 99'yzf r1 and I'm not sure what's wrong with it, The bike was running fine yesterday. I got off work today and went for a ride with some friends, I stoped and filled up at a bp and about 15...

Hi sounds like bad fuel, if it was an ethanol blend you bought, it could have a high water content, BP has a fuel guarantee but its pretty time consuming to get them to do anything, especially if it was a distributor site, not owned by BP.
Drain the carb bowls into a clean container and see if you can see any water or contaminants.
If the bike rides reasonably, it might come good on its own, with the next tank full. Make sure no ethanol( so bypass BP)
If you got some free water in your tank most of it will be below the reserve pick up, so the bike may stop completely if it gets to reserve.
Unfortunately if there is water in the bottom of your tank this may require draining the tank. as all the fuel additives will turn this into milky looking fuel that will make the bike run worse.

MY BIKE HAS A SIX INCH STRETCH I GOT EVERYTHING HOOKED UP I BLED THE BRAKES AND IT IS STILL NOT WORKING AT ALL

hi,i am assuming you have no front brakes, bleed the master cylinder before you try the calipers,to do this, simply pump up some brake pressure with the lever, hold the lever against the bar (fully applied)then crack the banjo bolt that holds the brake line onto the master cylinder, you should see air escape, retighten the banjo bolt, repeat the procedure untill all the air is gone,it doesnt take much air to stop the master cylinder working, once you have the master cylinder bled, then rebleed the calipers in the normall fashion, dont forget to put a rag down to protect the paint on your fuel tank, brake fluid loves paint...hope this helps,,cheers

Wire harness on a 2001 r1 shorted out

Hi, Tom the vast majority of service, parts, and owners manuals on the internet are "FREE" to download and all service manuals contain wiring diagrams in the back pages. The rest usually charge a modest fee around $10 and there is a handful of rare, obsolete, and very old models that are no longer available. Most of the manuals will cover your exact make, model, and year otherwise one will be provided that comes as close as possible to your bike and will have most of the same info that an exact manual would have. To download your manual please click on the links below. Good luck and have a nice day.
