Question about 1984 Honda VT 500 C Shadow

1 Answer

Honda shadow ACE 750 dies on idle after warmed up and choke returns. Cleaded carbs no change. Never had a problem with the bike since 2002. problem started after about 2 months without riding. Checked in carbs and looked brand new. cleaed and reassenbled. changed plugs. Still dies on idle after and backfires on decelleration on down hill or after arriving at highway speed and coast down. Dies when Cluch is pulled. Please help!

Check the your air cut diaphragm is not sticky ,cracked, or damaged. It is located typically on the side of the carburetor. Ethanol in the fuel can also cause this problem, try running fuel that is free from alcohol. When I cannot get no ethanol fuel I often have to turn my idle up to keep the bike from stalling. when I get good fuel the cycle revs up and I have to turn the idle back down (a real pain).

A bad fuel cut diaphragm will cause a Honda to backfire on deceleration ( provided of course it is not caused by an exhaust change). If you changed your exhaust you will have to get a jet kit for your caburetors or a power commander if your cycle is fuel injected.

I guess you will have to reset the air-mixture screws of the carburator/s.
Not bad if you check the condition of the spark plugs...if its ..'Whitish' means lean i.e. less gas in, Brownish...means ok, 'Blackish'...means too much gas in .....'rich'
In your bike's case you may find it 'whitish'.
Hope this helps !

It star with hoke on the maximum position only, is i throttle it dies imediatly. WHy ?

The choke setting required for starting is related to the temperature. In cold weather, a full choke is normally needed ; in normal temp (70 degrees F) a moderate choke may be all that is needed. Of course, once the engine starts, you may need to adjust the choke as the engine warms up - when ready to ride, you will want to have zero choke set. Hope this helps !

I can only start my 2003 Honda Shadow with the choke out and is difficult to keep it running, once I let off the choke the bike dies out. It has been in storage for over a year.

The carb needs to be cleaned as it has build up inside, This cannot be done without removing the carb and taking it apart to clean out all the small holes.

2002 HONDA SHADOW ACE 750 CARB

It sounds like you may have or will be jetting your carbs. I did this using the directions with the kit and used the Clyman manual for this bike to show me step by step how to remove the carborator. You will only need to attach 2 of the 4 hoses on your carb. syncronizer. If I remember right, you need to remove the bolt-on cooling fins to expose the engine block. The is a black screw or bolt that you take out and screw the threaded metal adapter of the sync tool. Be careful using the sync tool. Be very light on the throttle or the vacuum in the cylinder will **** in the mercury from the sync tool - not good. The problem you are stating on idle & backing off sometimes happens when the carbs are running rich (too much fuel) Hope that gets you in the right direction.
