Question about 1985 Yamaha XJ 700 S Maxim
You can jack under the pipes, they are strong enough to support the bike....
The trick is holding the bike upright without it tipping to one side or the other while sitting on the jack.
On my YZF1000R, I jack directly under the pipes, and use two ratchet straps connected to each side on the frame, and then hook one side to my work bench, and the other to my riding mower and that holds it upright.

This is a common problem if you are planning to keep the bike for a while build yourself a jig or wood braket set up to put the bike on your jack. Use wood so you can adjust it as necessary also use straps till you get it right.
