Either he button has gone bad. bad contacts to severely corroded or the starter itself has gone bad. Open the switch housing anf look there first. use a fine emery cloth or small finger nail file (cardboard one) to clean the contacts. squirt a little contact cleaner there too. Add a little dielectric grease to the contacts, reassemble and see what happens. if nothing happens... then it is the started itself

pushing the start button dims the lights is a sure indication that the battery is faulty
have it load tested or replace it
charging a dead battery after a 2 year period of being flat causes what is known as sulphation of the plates and the battery will not accept a charge regardless of the charge time.

mines a Manual trans (stick ) is yours. you said GEAR

battery =bat, full as in charged to 12.6vdc rested?
for get steering locks for now, lets work key on position.
first off: do head lights work?> not dim

so depress the clutch pedal (gears in neutral on stick)
this allows the starter to work.
you turn the key and the starter spins fast and so does
engine crank shaft, does it?

97 Suzuki LS 650 Savage won't turn over. Battery is charged to 12 volts, and I replaced the fuses, but still nothing. When I push the starter button nothing happens. No clicks, no lights dimming.

if you can arc and get it to work
what are the battery terminals like... clean and tight
check continuity for the earth chassis to battery neg - terminal wire
also the wire voltage to the starter from pos battery
if that checks out
bench test starter

We understand that your problem is: I just got my first harley, a 79 sportster, I think im having troubles with the whole ignition system, starter basically doesnt turn over at all, if anything the...

The first thing I would check is the battery. If you have a battery and no CCA then you will get this kind of issue. Load check the battery. It could have full voltage but carry dead cells and have no power to crank the motor. If the lights go dim when you push the starter button this may be the issue also check battery for corrosion and bad grounds. Check the negative cable at the battery and all ground cables to engine or frame for looseness. Let me know what happens.

2000 waverunner starter wont stop

This is most often caused by a battery that does not have a full charge on it. The low amperage available from the battery causes the contacts inside the starter relay to weld themselves together and allow the electric starter motor to continue to run even after the starter button is pushed. Always start out with a fully charged battery and you will not have this problem.

Starter won't engage.

how long did you hold the starter engaged while you were trying to start it? if you held it for a while you burnt your starter up. Or your starter could have just locked up. i had had a few do that. oh, one more question, does it click when you press the start button?
