2002 Honda VT 750 CD Shadow A.C.E. Deluxe Logo
Posted on Jul 18, 2009

I have a 2000 Honda Shadow 750 ACE. While riding at highway speed I accidently hit the kill switch. At first wasn't sure what had happened. Realized it was a fuel issue... noticed it was the kill switch. Switched it on with the clutch disengaged and hit the start switch... and wasn't sure if at the same time I engaged the clutch. Now... my starter won't work. I can bump start the bike easily but nothing from a standard start up using the starter button. I have check all the fuses... all ok. Battery is good. Suspect it is the solenoid but can't test wheather the starter button is delivering current to the solenoid. The connector contains both the contacts for the starter, the main fuse bus and bus. Any suggestions?

Sorry... that should read "Realized it was not a fuel problem..."

    Tim,
I figured it was the switch so I have taken it apart, cleaned up the contact and as you mentioned I raised them up a bit. The bike works fine now.

I jumped the two posts on the starter solenoid and it ran the starter just fine... so I knew it was either the solenoid or the starter switch.

Naturally, I turned to the starter switch as it was something I could fix.

I would have like to know where in heaven's sake the 9 pin plug was that contained the wires coming from the starter switch. If I knew that I could have done a continuity check there to isolate the problem... I could have shorted out the leads as well to check out the solenoid.

Still don't know where it is... but all is good now. I fixed it last week. Thanks for your input though.

Take the starter button off and put a 12 volt tester on one of the 4 leads that are wired into the button. Test each- If you find a hot line, take a small piece of wire and jump the current over to the other parrallel button. I worked on my bike for two weeks before I discovered this problem. Another problem was that the headlight would not come on. The starter would not crank at all. I took a screw driver and raised the brass leads on the switch so they would make contact and put the switch back together, and it worked. Good luck.

Thanks Tim, already had the Start switch hanging, took it apart and U were on the money, Thanks again

The first 2 contacts in the start switch are for the headlight, the 2nd 2 are for the starter, Blue and the mate next to it, The reason is so that the headlight doesn't draw current when the starter is engaged.

U probably wrecked your starter. if your headlighlt goes out and u here a small click then your relay is probably good. the relay can be better tested if you get a manual and a meter and check continuity with the button both in and out

2003 honda 750 ace, with the clutch lever pulled back when you put it in gear the engine dies.

Check you side stand safety switch. If it is unplugged, removed, or malfuntioning, the bike's system will think the side stand is down and kill the engine when the bike is put into gear.

Performance

1 - There are many possible variables here, such as added accessories, load, road, wind, etc., but the strictly stock bike will probably be the least stressed at 45 to 55 mph in 5th gear, although this engine is so understressed by design, that riding as fast as it will go is not likely to cause any damage.

2 - The ACE 750 has a loyal following of fans, and you can find them on the web by googling "honda 750 ace"; they know what works and what doesn't, and are more than willing to help.

2002 honda shadow deluxe custom 750. 100 miles only on this 8yr old bike. When trying to start the bike pull the choke hit the start button and sometimes it would start most of the time engine turns but no...

Sounds like the battery may be weak, recharge and test, maybe replace. As far as starting, most Hondas will not start if you open the throttle any at all. Shadows being liquid cooled are generally cold natured, but you should be able to ride away with the choke on in 1 or 2 minutes, you might have to ride as far as 4 or 5 miles at highway speed before you can take the choke fully off. If it is taking longer than these times, you will need to remove and clean the carbs. the low speed jets may be partially blocked up.

I have an 03 Honda 750 Shadow. I start the bike in nuetral and then put it in gear and it dies. It dies instantly.

Your kickstand switch is either broken or out of position. The bike kills the engine as a safety feature if it thinks the sidestand is down and the bike is put in gear while the engine is running.
