1996 Honda Fourtrax 300 acts like it has water in fuel. Only cuts out under load with throttle near wide open.

Had an issue before, previous owner says he cleaned carb... It would drip gas out the overflow of the carb unless I turned off the gas at the tank petcock. A simple tap with a screwdriver got it to eventually stop... My thinking is my float wasn't sealing off properly or was mis-aligned.. now that this has stopped tho... I still have the cutting out under load...symptoms should be similar to an xr or any other carb equipped motorcycle or atv

It runs out fine at wide open throttle on a level surface (asphalt) but if going up a steep hill in say 3rd gear, where the throttle is near wide open.. Its cuts out, bogs down, just like it has water in fuel.. or is getting way lean or rich. Which is bad? carb or cdi box?

Check air and fuel filters if good carb cleaning or rebuild so you can properly fix float problem and assure proper function

give it a good run if it doesnt foul out than wire was problem and if carb not cause and or causing problems leave it tapping may have cleared problem happy trails

Is the truck a E85 flex fuel vehicle? Not wanting to start sometimes until you give it wide open throttle means it's getting too much fuel, wide open throttle cuts fuel injectors fuel delivery.
Clear Flood Mode
If the engine floods, clear the engine by pressing the accelerator pedal down to the floor and then crank the engine. When the TP sensor is at wide open throttle (WOT), the ECM reduces the fuel injector pulse width in order to increase the air to fuel ratio. The ECM holds this injector rate as long as the throttle stays wide open, and the engine speed is below a predetermined RPM. If the throttle is not held wide open, the ECM returns to the starting mode.

Do you have a scan tool that can look at live data, fuel trims? Is the ECM adding fuel or taking fuel away. Mass air flow sensor data etc... Flex fuel calibrations may need to be reset .
