Where on the bike is the serial number? Bottom hanger bracket it's before 1952. Rear right drop out it's between 1953 to 1971.
If it is on the Head tube it's after 1972. There are no records of serial numbers before August 17, 1948 due to a fire at the original Schwinn factory.

Schwinn bikes made in the last several decades were made at many different overseas factories, and serial numbers varied. Look for a date code on the head tube or badge (where the fork goes through the frame. That is more helpful for date of manufacture. Would be helpful had you told us the model of the bike.

lots of bike repair manuals at your local library. That is how I got started 30 years ago. Bicycle parts haven't changed much over the last 100 years, the concepts are still the same, so just about any bicycle repair manual will give you all the basics.

Park Tool manual is good, Bicycling Magazine has one, Leonard Zinn has a couple good ones. Barnett's manual is the bees knees of bicycle repair, used by professionals worldwide.

That should not be possible unless the fork is backward. The lower end of the fork should curve away toward the front of the bike.

I don't know the year or size of your bike, but schwinn's website has manuals from '03 to '07 online.
If the bike is older, I can only suggest searching the internet for photos of your bike. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words.
