I have a 1982 Maxim 650 that is stuck in 2nd gear. Does anybody have any ideas?

There is a small spring that returns the shift mechanism to a neutral position that has probably broken or become unhooked. The same problem can happen if upon reassembly the shift activator gears slide past each other and no longer twist the mechanism. Either way you should be able to look at the mechanism and spring by taking off the shift lever and removing the engine cover behind the lever. The cover. http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1982-yamaha-xj650j/o/m8214#sch227044 The mechanism and small spring (part#2) http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1982-yamaha-xj650j/o/m8214#sch227724

How many quarts does the 1982 Yamaha XJ-750 maxim take to do an oil change? I did change the oil filter too! Also, do you know where I can get an owner's manual?

I have an 85 700 maxim so I should think they are about the same. It's not hard as long as your exhaust is not in the way, I can't remember I change the standard exhaust a long time ago. The drain bung should be between the second and third down pipe on the underside of the engine, loosen anticlock and drain oil into something with at least 1-gallon capacity. The filter (on mine anyway) sticks out from the front of the engine at the bottom again between the two middle down pipes, as far as I remember a 10mm(3/8) socket or spanner will take the casing of to allow you to change it, well worth doing at the same time as the oil (no point putting fresh oil through a dirty filter). So when you're new filter is on and your drain bung back in put the bike on the centerstand on level ground and fill to the mark with fresh oil. Then start the bike and allow it to idle for a few minutes. Stop bike. Check oil level after 10 mins or so and top up to the level again as your filter should now be filled also and will leave a little less in the sump. If its no different don't worry just check it again after you have been for a ride just remember to give the oil time to settle back into the sump. The best time to check oil is before you start the bike from cold

I'm looking for a wiring diagram for a 1982 XJ750 Maxim, or even just the colour of the oil lamp wire please. Not the 650 - my bike not listed

There are several wiring diagrams available on this thread:

http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=22706/view=next.html

There are actually a few sub-models of the XJ750, so be sure you look carefully, but it looks like the oil indicator wire is "B/r" on all of them. That most likely means black with a red line.

XJbikes.com is a great source of information for the maxims and secas from the 80's, but it is not a substitute for a good shop manual. If you are planning to do some work on your own bike, a shop manual will be a worthwhile investment. the Haynes manuals are great, and you can usually find a new one on ebay for around $25. The best part about those shop manuals is that they cover a few years and models of similar bikes, so you may even be able to reuse it for future projects.

Good Luck,
-Josh

Oil capacity?

Should be 3.5 Liters / quarts with the filter change. Put in 3 liters then top up as needed to get the level to the top of the viewing window.

To check your oil, bike should be level, on it's center stand, engine should NOT be running!

Any oil viscosity between 10w30 and 20w50 will work just fine. Smaller numbers if the weather's cooler and/or you only do short rides. Bigger numbers for hot weather and longer rides.

I just bought a 1982 yamaha maxim 650 and was

Change oil and, filters regularly; lube the throttle cables and, all moving parts drain the fuel tank and, replace the fuel filter every year, or; when needed. never leave fuel in the bike when you store it without using "stabil" only check your ignition with a timing light get a maintenance schedule from the bike's manufacturer and, follow it.
