Question about 2004 Harley Davidson FXD - FXDI Dyna Super Glide

Battery slowly discharges on my 2002 FXD when engine runns

Battery slowly discharges on my 2002 FXD when the engine is running. The discharge light never comes on. I replaced the voltage regulator and it didn't fix the problem. Batter will charge with a trickle charger. Wanted to ride to Carslile, Pa tomorrow but don't want to get stuck with a dead battery. I tried disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery when the bike was running as a test and the motor died instantly.

So you're running off the battery instead of the charging system, check all your wires from the alternator to the regulator/rectifier for open connections or shorts to the frame. You could have a bad rectifier if it's separate from the regulator, you may also have a bad alternator, if you've got a multi-meter check the AC voltage between the ground and each of the three wires coming from the alternator (usually yellow). They should all be about the same, and measure over 16 V, increasing with RPMs. Hope that helps

Battery dead. recharged, car started. drove 20 miles. parked 8 hrs. drove back home. after parking 15 minutes car wont start. Which is problem, alternator or battery?

Don't know.
You would need to have both components tested. It could be a dead cell in the battery. Or a bad connection. If the alternator were at fault it should discharge when the engine is running and slowly go dead.

Cranks wont start

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Open hood and look for disconnected spark-plug wires or vacuum lines. Corrosion at battery terminal will also prevent car from starting. Clean battery cable ends and battery terminal with wire brush or water and rag and tighten battery cable ends. And make sure the connections on battery are fine.

Also check the fuse box for blown fuses & fuel pump relay. Check that if there is spark and starter motor is getting any power. Also check the output of the battery. You'll need to check all these with a multimeter.

Discharged or dead battery is one of the possible reasons for a car not to start. Very common is the situation when we forget to turn the lights off overnight (the dome light, for example), which causes the battery to drain. In this case when attempting to start a car, all you will probably hear will be a clicking noise - there won't be enough power to turn the starter. Here is the simple way to check if the battery is discharged: Turn the ignition on. With the engine off, turn the windshield wipers on. If they move way too slow, much slower than usual, the battery is probably discharged. Also look at the dashboard lights - if they appear very dim, the battery is probably discharged.

If the battery is relatively new, it can be recharged. All you need to do is to boost your car and let the engine run for a while to charge the battery.
However if your battery is more than three-four years old, you will probably need to buy a new one. Sometimes, an old battery may even die with no apparent reason, even if the day before it was OK.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Rylee

I think I have a bad stator on my 2002Harley Dyna

too many variables !
Firstly check battery under load ! any battery place or auto electrician can so it usually free!
do this before replacing any thing else!
make sure all connections are clean & tight
if battery is ok get them to check the charge rate on bike! its a simple test or you can do it with a volt meter they are only cheap to buy!

Loose wire connections must be checked first.

As the battery is relatively new, it can be recharged. All you need to do is to boost your car and let the engine run for a while to charge the battery
