If I understand you, the leak is coming from the inspection cover for the primary chain. There should be an O ring on that plate. If the cover is leaking when the bike is off you have way to much oil in the primary. The primary only takes 1 quart of gear lube, I use Mobile 1.

What is cause of oil leak on left side only when on kick stand, leak appears to be on engine casing just above shifter what is cause of oil leak

Hi, Glenn usual suspects are "shift shaft seal", engine cover gasket, drive shaft boot gasket, etc for this scenario you will need your service/owners manual if you can't find the first and best tool you ever bought for your Yamaha, despair not, for a mere $0 you can download another one. I see a few owners of Sportsters asking about oil leaking from the breather tube behind the oil tank. In tracing this vent it is attached to the cases a little behind the starter and above the clutch...

Hi John, make sure there are no obstructions in this vent line such as kinks or collapsed portion and that it is indeed the tansmission vent line if it is you can put an extention on it and run it to the ground away from the rear tire. Good luck.

1993 VT 1100 C Shadow: Leaking oil on left side above kick stand...

Based off my experience today...which lasted several hours of researching this same issue on my 1993 Honda Shadow vt1100, it's most likely not oil but is rather fluid leaking out of the master cylinder that operates the clutch mechanism. I'm assuming you have a hydraulic clutch like mine. Directly above the kick stand is a metal plate that looks like it could be part of the engine but has an 8mm bolt holding it on at the bottom. Take that off and directly in front of you is your cylinder. You should inspect the lines and bleed the clutch lines to make sure that air isn't you issue. Beyond that you are where I am now.....did all that stuff but can't figure out my issue. Just thought I could catch you up at least that far and save you a little time.

Oil leak

the round oval shaped object in question should be the canister where your oil filter goes ,yes there is a gasket on the inside that may have been broke or left off on your last oil change
