SOURCE: Briggs and Stratton OHV V-Twin 24hp repetitive valve adjustment

Try pulling out the choke a little, if it stops backfiring the mixture is too lean, check the intake
pipes at the cyl head and also the plastic runners to the carb for leaks.

Go to this site and you can download a free PDF service manual.
www.carlsalter.com/motorcycle-manuals.asp The closest in the list is a 2003. This will work perfectly well for your repairs. Yearly changes are normally cosmetic and don't affect the mechanics.
Can I get a “very helpful” rating on this answer? Thanks!

My bike lost power but still idles good I think the valves need adjusted what are the specs

The valves having too large a gap will slightly affect power but not dramatically. Good idle but less power under load usually means poor spark for firing so check out your spark plug for a nice bright purple spark first. If the valves need adjusting you can really hear them ticking, like an old school VW bug
Valve gap is usually .002-.004 for intake valves and .004-.006" for exhaust

How do I adjust ZZR1400 valve clearence

The valve lash adjustments on these bikes are done with shims on a COLD engine.
Intake valves 0.15-0.20
Exhaust valves 0.22-.0.27
Check the specs on your emissions sticker to confirm...California bikes are subject to change.
If you are not familiar with timing marks and adjustment procedures, i recommend you buy the manual and follow the steps outlined, the illustrations are also a big help.
Good luck, i hope this helps.

How do i adjust the valves on a 05 klx 125

I'm not 100% sure on this particular bike, but most late model hi-perf japanese bikes have shim adjustment. You can tell if you take the tappet cover off & the cams run straight ontop of the valves, If it's shims, you need to turn the motor until the cam lobes (pointy parts) face as opposite to the valves as possible (usually upwards) so the valve is completely shut, then use feeler gauges to me asure the gap between the valve tip & the cam. The valve springs can be compressed slightly (carefully) to let the shim on top (or underneath) the bucket be removed & replaced with the right thickness to give factory specs. Sometimes one shim from one valve can be used to make another valve correct, leaving less shims to buy. If not shims, should have a simple screw & locknut adjuster, same setup, just measure between valve & rocker, adjust to factory specs (or slightly smaller for more go)

Adjustment of valves

A service manual is a valuable tool with an aging bike. I suggest the dealer/mfr. or Clymer books. In the meantime, go to the library reference section...646 stacks should have what you need.

New Bike Serviced Required??

Sounds about right. Most bilkes need the valves adjusted every 3-4000 miles. 3 hours also sounds right and you can check around to get a better hourly shop rate.

Bastards! Valves will only get tighter on our bikes so there is that. If you are concerned call another honda shop 1-800 and get service department to listen to you
